I stand by what I said.

Well, lets break down what you said.

The body weighs nothing.

Seems a simple enough statement. Body = 0 lbs.

Body 700lb

Wait, so now the body weighs something?

Weight is still all down low.

Okay, so maybe you're trying to say you don't move a significant amount of weight up.

Frame 1500lb
Drivetrain 1500lb
Tires and axles 1300lb
Bumpers and sliders 1000lb
= 5300
Body 700lb
Not much weight to move up.

Even using your numbers (which are grossly high in some categories, for example frame is about 1/3rd the weight you give), you have a total sprung weight of 4700 lbs. Of that, 700 lbs is the body.

So that means that you're raising...wait...can't be right, 14% of the body weight up? Hmm, I think that might count as significant.

And more realistic numbers are closer to:

Frame 500lb
Drive train 1500lb
Bumpers and sliders 600 lb
Body 1000lb

That gives you 3600 lbs of sprung weight, which means the body is....27% of that weight.

Hmm.....guess 27% might be considered significant. And increasing the height of almost a third of the total weight would affect CoG, and quite significantly.

So it goes back to a body lift raises CoG, but about a quarter the amount that a suspension lift does. So (very roughly) you could do a 3 to 4 inch body lift for the same weight penalty as a 1" suspension lift. (It's not linear, but close enough for web wheeling.)

FWIW I'm a huge BL fan (for 1-3" lifts, not stupid large ones). And I think you gain a lot more benefits from splitting your total lift between a suspension and body lift, than you do by a pure suspension lift. But trying to claim that a body lift "doesn't affect the center of gravity" just makes body lift proponents look foolish.

A true statement -

Body lift doesn't raise COG as much as suspension lift.

Untrue statement -

A body lift doesn't raise the center of gravity.

Now lets get back to this cool grill mod, and I want to see some tube fenders!

Your weights are grossly low. Body lift does not raise it. You are just raising the body.
Most of the weight of the vehicle would still be in the frame, suspension, running gear, engine, fuel...etc
So COG is still low.

Your weights are grossly low.

My weights are based on piecing together actual measurements (weights from folks parting out pieces of 80's and Toyota's actual stated specs for weights). But hey, you're already saying that you're not going to let reality rain on your parade.

Body lift does not raise it. You are just raising the body.

I don't understand why you keep saying this. Technically speaking, if you place a feather on the roof rack, you're raising your center of gravity. (A tiny amount, but it still happens.) Moving 14% (your numbers) to 27% (real life numbers) of the weight raises the center of gravity quite a bit.

Any amount of weight being placed higher on the vertical plane must raise the center of gravity. It's literally a law of physics.

Most of the weight of the vehicle would still be in the frame, suspension, running gear, engine, fuel...etc
So COG is still low.

I just don't get why you don't say this and leave it at that. This statement, in and of itself, is absolutely true, and one I absolutely agree with.

Mine too. Last statement was ridiculous. Not worth commenting on.

OH NOW YOU AGREE???

Well, I guess if I were uploading pictures more often and actually working on the truck, this wouldn't be going on... I am not body lifting the truck because I want 0% center of gravity increase and I don't want to spend the money, and I already have a 91 sitting in my garage that needs the body lifted off to get out of my garage and into scrap metal (only half a body left, no title I salvaged all I could) and I don't want to do it twice.
There are easier ways to do what I'm doing, but I want to do it my way, because, "I'm a grown man and I'll do what I want" Rampage Jackson.
Here's a wheeling pic to tide you guys over. Glad I have some interest in this thread.

You're a Pastor?

looks cool with the round lights. I like it. Cant wait to see a finish product

Thanks. Yeah, I'm a pastor. Spent some of my budget money for the truck on some kids in Mexico, but worth it. My wife's truck is semi-finished, and I picked up a JMR bender. Now I have to make a stand and get a die. Also picked up some fj40 fenders for cheap off CL, so they are going to get modified. It seemed like it would be easier to do that then do 100% from scratch. Sorry I don't have much to give you right now as far as pics.

Sounds like its gonna be sweet!

bump.

done a little more

So the 40 fenders were way too wide, so I split them and welded half to the truck to use it as a mounting location. Welding sheet metal sucks... and I'm not good at it at all, but I love learning. This is about 10% done on this side. I'm super slow but that's my life right now. I would like to be done before it gets to that unbearable AZ heat.

So Im still not 100% on this. Does a body lift increase COG or not? I think we should discuss it a little more for my benefit...

To the OP, lookin good. I want to see what you come up with. On a side note, do you get harassed by the cops dding a van with no fenders? Even though I live in frenchman (our version of redneck) heaven I think Id be getting tickets w/o fenders.

D

Of course it does, you are moving weight up (no matter how little said weight is) I'm sure if you started a thread about it, one of our resident nerds would love to crank out the numbers to tell you by how much. Unfortunately this really interesting thread has been highjacked with this COG banter.

But what does it really mean to have a center.....

Thanks man, but I just had a renter move out of a house and he trashed it. I'm doing a full blown remodel for a flip now... 3 bed/2bath... I have loads of stuff to do. Hopefully I can still make time for the truck, but the next few weekends are going to be about drywall, tile, sinks, cabinets....
