FYI - Replace your gas cap gasket - P/N 77316-16010

I've had very strong fuel fumes coming from my gas cap area. It will happen at high elevation (I'm at 1450 usually) and when the truck is sitting idle/low speed for a long time (on wheeling runs). I replaced my charcoal canister after being extremely gassed out returning from the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago but it still persists.

The last trip up Casner in AZ my daughter noticed some fuel spilling out of the filler neck going up steep grades, last month in Payson we were gassed out sitting idling waiting for some trucks to catch up on the trail and I stopped by @LandCruiserPhil's for an hour a week back and was gassed out all the way home.

Long story but I finally discovered that my gas cap gasket is worn out. Apparently it's supposed to be replaced like every 60K miles. I've ordered one for my LX and the wife's RX. Toyota listed the part all the way up to a 2005 Corolla.

Anyway, replace yours if you smell fuel when the truck is hot or at high altitudes.

I recently did my Gas Cap, Oil Filler Cap, PS Cap and it resolved air leaks, oil leaks, and fuel smells!

Awesome; replaced the oil cap gasket last year. Less leaks. And now, just today, while messing with the PS system I noticed some fluid leaking out of the cap. Just like the oil cap, if that is a gasket it's rock hard now and needs to go.

Anyone have P/N for PS cap?

You realize that Az Smog Nazis give you a new cap for free when you fail the cap pressure test? I fail almost every 2 years!!

I've never cap tested, plug into ODB2 and I'm in and out.

Trust me, you may not see the emissions techs testing your gas cap, but it's a part of the IM 240 testing protocol, so they always test it.

Since i stopped doing emission testing for Maricopa, and Pima county almost 20 years ago, i guess if what Inkpot said is correct, they now give customers new gas caps when they fail the gas cap test. So if your gas cap was bad, they should have given you a new one.

When i had customers who had to do the Maricopa, and Pima county emission test, the gas cap test use to be one of their biggest bitches. Ninety nine times out of a hundred, they would past the dino test with flying colors, but would then fail the gas cap pressure test.

By failing the gas cap pressure test they had to do the whole test over again, waiting in line at the testing facility in June, July, and August really pissed them off. Most customers use to think failing the gas cap pressure test was just a ploy by the testing company.

That way the testing company could force them to retest, and if they failed the retest, they could then make them spend another 25 bucks for a whole new test, thereby making extra money for the testing company.

I think the smog stations fail the caps much more often than they used to just so they can prove that they are “saving the world” from all those emissions. They fail my cap every 2 years, and they always look surprised when I tell them that they just replaced it 2 years ago!!

I use to test customers non OBD 1 and 2 cars on our shops emissions tester before they went in for their smog test, to make sure that they would pass. The thing was, there were certain lanes at testing stations that always failed their cars. When one of my customers returned to my shop telling me that his car failed, i knew something was wrong.

I made no adjustments to his car, i just drove his car straight back to that testing station, but this time i used a different lane, it passed with flying colors. I wrote a complaint to Arizona DEQ that certain testing lanes always failed cars that i had adjusted, then tested, and knew were within spec.

They wrote back telling me that that was just not possible, that the testing vendor always calibrated their testing equipment daily. I have to be honest, i called bull**** on them calibrating their equipment to spec everyday. After that letter i made it a point to tell my customers not to use certain lanes at certain testing station.

As long as my customers stayed away from those lanes they passed the first time through. Problem was, the testing station would sometimes close down those lanes while my customer was already waiting in line, then forcing them over to the problem lane that failed cars.

To this day, i feel they had one or two lanes at each station that they always kept just a little bit out of calibration, just enough so they could fail older cars to make extra money off of retesting fees, just like their little gas cap trick.

Fun Fact...this gasket is supposed to be ROUND. Mine is not.
