Z80, I was talking to Christo at CM and I think he has part time gears for your transfer case. Add the selectable hubs and you are set. Once this is done you cannot have full time 4 wheel drive. Give him a call.

Charlie, as I eluded to, I'm very soon going to add an accessory to the vehicle. Not that it's top secrect, I just didn't feel like getting into a big discussion prior to the install. Right now I'm dealing with the second batch of my seat mod and will get into it after that.

I'll post it up when done.

TracTech had pulled the Electrac from the market...the actuator was on the outside of the diff, which can be problematic for rock crawling (can be ripped off)...last I heard they were doing a redesign. But you are right - the gear driven limited slip that can be locked is a perfect product if it is strong enough. That is the weakness of the True Trac - it's not a very strong differential compared to fulll lockers and good clutch type limited slips (better for the front axle than the rear).

Just so you know....a rear Detroit, once you get used to it....is head and shoulders better than a limited slip as long as you have an automatic transmission (they can be hell with a manual transmission as they tend to unload during gear switches). Add a True Trac up front with AWD, and you have a setup that is flat out incredible in the snow and everything but extreme crawling. And it is always there - something that you do not and cannot have with seletable lockers. Don't believe the hype about open diffs in the snow - having one tire spinning is rarely a good thing.

For twisty roads, the Detroit will behave just like a limited slip...it's only sharp turns that need to unlock, and you just need to stay off the throttle. For a harcore crawler or a country rig, you just can't go wrong with the Detroit in the rear diff. It's the city rigs that need the selectable lockers.

Although I do dissagre with the hard-core crawler comment. You just need to learn to left foot it on obstacles and your good to go. Again, only with an auto!

For those not wanting the hastle of a gear swap, I HIGHLY recomend the Aussie locker. I am running one right now in the rear and very much prefer it to a detroit. It has not one time made a pop or a bang. I never even know it is there on the street, except for the almost silent "click click click" pulling into a parking spot. When I swap gears next year I will probobly keep the Aussie in the rear...I love it that much.
 
Aussie Locker

I just bought one of these as I don't have the cash for a selectable locker at the moment. Any suggstions on the install ? Into a 97 FZJ80
 
Assuming it's like a LR, it's a pretty easy install, but you need to pull the 3rd member. The directions that come with it should lay it all out.

I've had a LR in the rear of my 80 for near 70k miles. It was cheap and easy to install. I'd prefer a Detroit for strength, and I will install one if I go larger than 33s. I will probably go electric locker up front some day. I like fulltime 4, and I don't want to give it up for a front autolocker.

A friend drove his 80 with no front driveshaft and center diff unlocked. He got about 30MPH max.
