Fuel Vapor Separator - Mounting Position

So, the PO of my 78 FJ40 (California) fabricated a custom cover to hide the vapor separator and all the hoses, etc. - the vapor separator itself is just laying in the space in the horizontal position (see photo). Been trying to find any 'position' related threads. The info I have found with photos does show this part mounted what I would call 'vertical'. Also, in the photos of others I have seen, there appears to be mounting holes. My FJ40 does not have a spot to mount. Is there a special bracket perhaps for the 78 model?

Does it make a difference if the device is vertical or horizontal?

The seperator should be vertical. It mounts inside the separator cover, which bolts to the tub. One of the cover bolt holes is shown in your photo above.

The passenger seat being moved back from it's original position explains why your separator cover is missing.

I'll have to look into the seat position. I can't see where it has been modified. Thanks for the info on the mounting position of the separator - I thought it was likely intended to be vertical, but I wasn't sure whether it could be horizontal or if that affected it's function.

I just took a couple of photos of a 76. The filler cover is a two-piece affair. In these photos, the outer piece is painted a red oxide color and the inner piece is still the stock pewter color. The two pieces bolt together in the middle, below the speaker in the photos.

The vapor separator is bolted to the inside of that outer cover.

I was wrong about the seat position in your truck. The seat rail just looked closer to the filler tube in your photo than I remembered, and it might have explained why your cover was missing or modified. Looking at my truck, though, the seat rail is just as close to the filler tube as it shows in your photo. If you get the two pieces of the cover, you should be able to just bolt them in place. I do see them in the classified section now and then.

Is that white plastic inline thing a roll-over valve? If so, is it stock?

yes it's an oem check valve. I don't see why it's actually needed but I'm trying to do this just the way Toyota planned it.
