What is the common though on the fuel tank location in the FJ-40.
I am building mine right now that will be getting a 350 and have the opportunity now to easily move the tank to a cell setup in the rear as part of a storage system. or I can wire wheel the ones I have, POR 15 the out side and put it back in the stock location.
what are most people doing for there off roaders . this is not a restoration by any means.

Thank You

It's fine where it is. IMHO, you ought to just clean it up and put it back, and spend your build time where you get more return for your effort :).

I left it where I found it :meh:

X3

When my underseat tank leaked my plan was to ditch it... Now that it's replaced, no gas smell, and it's very well protected from collisions and rocks... Next to figure out a skid plate for the Aux rear tank.

It's up and out of the way. Why mess with it? A fuel cell is a giant pain to deal with in so many ways. I say pick your battles wisely.

One of mine was rusty and leaky with a section that was full of pinholes. The radiator shop boiled it out and soldered a sheet of brass over the area, all for about $60. It had been sitting on some old cloth straps that were able to hold water. I wire-wheeled the tub under there, sprayed it with rustoleum and used some sections of bicycle inner tubes as pads when I put it back down. It should be good for another 20 years, I figure.

I spent a lot of time thinking about this also. Mine is a build, as opposed to a restoration but I have stayed with a 100% Toyota drive train. I kept the tank in the original location, sort of. I went with a 28-gallon aluminum saddle tank under both front seats. This did require some fab work, which I had to pay for. But I am very, very happy with the result.
