Hi, I own a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 4.5L I've developed a fuel smell inside the cabin. I've checked all fuel hoses, fuel injectors and other fuel related components in the engine compartment but have found no fuel leaks or fuel smell. I've checked the fuel cap and again no fuel smells. I've crawled under the vehicle and inspected the fuel tank for any visible fuel leaks but have found none and there is not a fuel smell either. I've checked around the fuel tank filler neck inside the vehicle but again have not found any. Has anyone had a similar experience?
Thank you so much,
AustinZ

When do you get the smell? Is it while driving, warm or cool engine, full tank of gas etc.?

When you take your cap off do you have a whoosh sound? If you do your charcoal canister needs to be replaced I would also check the tank access under the rear seats and make sure the gasket is still good and now leaking there.

suggest inspecting the steering shaft firewall seal. If there is some kind of fuel leak in the engine compartment, then that would be a path into the cabin, so you can smell it. Then, take a look at the emissions fuel vapor canister and hoses - check valve function and hose cracks. it's on the driver side, not too far from the firewall seal.

Evap canister still installed on the truck?
Hi, and thank you for your quick reply.
The Charcoal canister is still in the vehicle, I tested by blowing through the inlet pipe but no air goes into it, appears to be clogged up.
I've been looking for a replacement on the internet but I'ven't been able to locate one. Do you by any chance know where I can get one or perhaps one from a different manufactures that would work in my application?
Thank you,
AustinZ

Thank you very much for your fast reply. I think the charcoal canister needs replacement but I'haven't found a replacement anywhere. The whoosh sound is present only when the tank is almost empty. I've been looking for an access on the floor above the gas tank but can't seem to find it, I would think there should be one in order to replace the fuel pump (when that time comes) otherwise you would need to drop the entire fuel tank. I'll look for that access again tomorrow, I hope I can find it. Meantime if you've any idea where could I find a replacement charcoal canister I would appreciate it very much.

Get ahold of @LandCruiserPhil he actually modifies the stock ones there then is also an Autozone one you can swap in. I forget the part number, search for it here on MUD.

So this is an old thread, but maybe somebody will see this. I am the only owner of an FJ80 ( I'm not sure if it is FZJ8O or F*)) 1994 Landcruiser, these past 31 years. Id like to fix it up. But the man thing is my GF wont drive it because she finds it to be toxic. (We've been together for more than 10 years, :) so not getting a new GF). If you stand outside the car, after driving into town (8miles), you can smell the (?) engine from 10 feet away. There is a bent hood. If anyone knows where to get a replacement, I am all ears. Code 183, blue slate gray. It does not seem to be a sweet smell. The car does skip when making hard turns. That may be due to some problem in the differential or transfer case as I understand it. The engine has been cleaned, but down low on the axle or some kind of strut (?) there is probably some old leak from the differential. The differential is not currently leaking, however. I cant afford a new car right now. ( House repairs, lots of them). I could post the VIN number if that helps. There are no obvious leaks. Noone can find the source of the smell. Noone really cares to find the source. But I do.

What are you asking? Are you trying to figure out the source of the fuel smell, find a hood for your LC, or a leak from something?

If you are willing to do some research, I would go out to your LC and open the gas cap. If you hear the sound of rushing air you should look at replacing the gas cap and the charcoal canister.

The LC is known for cracking the fuel tank around the area where the parking brake cable goes over it. Part of me believes it could be related to the added pressure in the tank from a failing gas cap or charcoal canister.

Things to check:
- evap vacuum lines. The hard lines corrode and clog. Order replacement vacuum lines and make a bypass.
- charcoal canister. Clogs. You can replace it with any suitably sized replacement. Oem is nla

There are other things to check too but those are the most likely.
