I have a fuel guage on my 83 fj that is stuck on half tank and I ran out of fuel. Filled the tank up and still reads half. Replaced this gauge with a used fuel gauge guaranteed to work. It shows empty when engine is not running.. (good) Will go up to half a tank when vehicle is running..... then fluctuates a little more than the width of the needle. Any thoughts as to what might be happening here.

Your sending unit float might be rusted in place. Try removing it and inspecting it. If it's all caked up with rust, clean so it moves freely.

Thanks for the info. The sending unit appears to check out very good.. Any other possibilities ?

Check the nuts on the back of the gauge cluster that hold the gas and temp gauges in. They are notorious for not getting a good ground to the gauge.
