Getting the smell of fuel around the gas tank area. Pretty consistent. Nothing to do with fill ups or gas cap. Wondering if any one else has had this problem, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help.

could it be coming from the frame? mainly from the foreward end of the left frame rail?

i will check, seems more often that it is from the back left corner of the car, commen sense knows that is where the filler neck is but it could be close to empty of full and it is the same effect.

When you open the cap do vapors audibly rush out? Like the tank is pressurized? If not you may have an air leak, these leaking vapors could give you the smell of gas and would happen at any fuel level, I would start with the easy fix, new OEM gas cap, the aftermarket one I bought to pass emissions did not work the same

If that is not it start inspecting the vent line and fill line coming from the filler and the lines on top of the tank and then foreword to the engine and charcoal canister

Smelly mobil

Yeah, I get the same gas smell back there as well. From what I have been reading/hearing it is probably due to charcoal canister needing changing. I have also learned that they are pretty expensive and stopped there. Does anyone out there have the real answer? I have a 96, 150k, and it does this weather full or empty and yes there is a lot of pressure in the tank when I unscrew the gas cap.
Cheers for anyone with more insight

You need a new gas cap.
