Hi Brian,

Well, I'm up and running. Had to replace the idle screw as it was too short. After replacing that and making some adjustments, runs great. Was running a little rich, so backed the air/mixture screw down to 1.5 turns out. Seems to run better. I promised someone early on that I'd take photos of everything, so will do that in a day or so.

Was wondering why the throttle linkage was sloppy, even when I first got it. It would stick to the floor and do other weird things. Located a hole with grommet by the firewall. Soo, pulled the linkage apart, placed the rear of the linkage rod into the hole and reconnected everything. Damn! Nice and tight and responsive. Before, I had to put my foot under the throttle and pull up to slow down. Now, that's safe, right? LOL!!!! Not anymore.

Amp and heat gauges work. The add-on oil pressure gauge works.

Have two of the Bilstein shocks installed. Will do rears next.

Screwed the gas filter to the hole I located in the support bracket for the battery. Seems to work ok.

Now, if I can just get the proper tie rod end for the left front (passenger side). Some places call it the right front. Some call it the left front. Then you have inner and outer. GRR! What I'm finding is that the portion that slips inside the rear tie rod are too short and can't get the cotter pin in. And this is my second extended tie rod. Tie rods aren't rocket science, so what's the problem? And I have the Toyota part number.

AutoZone says they have one that will fit. So, we shall see. Funny, they describe as right front, but the part number ends with an L, which tells me left side. Also located another place just in case.

Again, to you and everyone else who helped me with this project up to this point, THANK YOU! I would not have been able to do this without all of your support. You guys are awesome!

Sincerely,

Dennis

Dennis, so stoked for you!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I'm looking forward to the pictures.
Funny about the throttle linkage😆, glad you got it sorted out.

I replaced all my tie rod ends a few years ago with a kit. Took lots of pictures and measurements before I took it apart and even numbered the rods with a metal stamp so I could put them back together after paint.

When I took it to get it aligned, the guy said he adjusted one link all the way in and it was still not within spec. So I had to take it apart and cut about 1/2" off of a BRAND NEW tie rod end. It worked out when I took it back to the alignment shop, but was frustrating because I bought the kit from a Land Cruiser parts vendor.

Good luck with the tie rod, you're smart to have a back-up plan.

Hi Brian,

I bought a kit from a Land Cruiser parts vendor as well. They refunded my money, thus the dilemma. I'm down to just that one tie rod end in order to get on the road. Should know by Wednesday. Then see if I'll need to do what you had to do.

glad you caught the toque Rod out of the main Pivot Grommet , that could have been Evil , some times

they fall out due to a bad worn grommet or the 2 firewall bracket Bushings are smoked ........

give them all a good inspection , and if need be i have a Solution Below in the Link :

Hi ToyotaMatt,

Apparently the previous owner did not get the torque rod into the pivot grommet when he installed the Weber. Was a white knuckle experience when I got it running good enough to get it to DMV and register. Then figured something was wrong when I replaced that Weber with a rebuilt carb for the FJ, and spotted the issue. Grommets appeared good, but what the heck, sine I'm replacing about everything as to hoses, grommets, etc., might as well get this done now.

One thing I did spot in your fantastic photos is that I do not have that nylon bushing (3rd photo).

Thanks for the website. Now I have another source for parts. :)

Brian,

I ran into a hand cleaner that is unreal. I've tried a lot of them over the years and this stuff blows those other products away, in case you could use a good hand cleaner. The product is called Grip Clean and I got it on Amazon. It's a heavy duty hand soap and all natural. Doesn't dry your hands out, either. I love this stuff. Just a thought.

Thanks Dennis! I usually wear gloves (mechanix or nitrile) but sometimes I'll start goofing with something on my Cruiser and before I know it, I'm covered in grime. I'll order some of the Grip Clean for those times. 👍🏻
