I was looking at the side of my motor yesterday, thinking about ways to complicate my life, and thought of this one:

when I removed the ACSD/thermowax, i simply ran a hose (3/8" I think) from the block back to the block to bypass what was the thermowax

I've got an old (un-used) 2F fuel filter sitting around.

Any reason not to put the fuel filter in that line? might catch a little bit of grit/grime/dirt/stuff

I was also thinking of putting a temp sender into a brass T there. Seems like an easy spot to add stuff.

Anyone see a reason that this would cause trouble?

Side note: its really really dusty here. My overflow reservoir regularly gets grime on the sides, I'm assuming that there is dust/grunge throughout the cooling system and that it probably does little harm, but certainly does no good.
 
Isn't the paper filter media going to expand as it takes on moisture rendering your filter useless in a very short time? I know this happens when fuel has enough water in it. You would want some sort of stainless steel screen filter on a bypass system only.

I'll have to take a look at the filter.

I assume that the fuel filter would swell with gas as much as with water, but that may be a faulty assumption

I'm sure that the tefba works
but I was kinda hoping to make something work with the parts I have handy vs. buying more stuff
 
dunno about using a fuel filter but you could have a look and see if a proper coolant filter will fit to the same base. or is the filter you're talking about an inline type?
 
Your local farm supply will probably have an inline sprayer filter in various hose sizes. These have a screw top access with a removeable stainless screen in various mesh sizes which is designed to filter particles before they reach the nozzles. They will handle pressure but I am not sure about the heat. It might be worth a try because they are not expensive.
 
i get that you are trying to (make do )and bodge something together with parts you have ,however there is the old saying "best tool for the job , do not re invent the wheel ,etc. ". i believe this is one of those situations and a cheap solution already exists .
on the other side i have seen small filters of this nature used in welder liquid cooling systems that would be ideal ,only concers would be restricting flow .

Funny. When you look at the Tefba components. It looks like you could assemble something similiar from home depot parts.

Be careful of the temperature and pressure handling of the components. Engines get hot in comparison to sprayers.

It'd be bloody boring if none of us ever experimented though, (and quite needlessly too, on occasion), wouldn't it. :D Half the fun is in the trying. As long as one accepts the fact that things can go arse up with a vengeance if things do go wrong, there's no reason not to experiment.
