Is my fuel door supposed to open all the way when I pull the lever. Or is it normal that after I pull the lever I need to stick my finger in the crack and open it?

This 97 always had a lot of resistance on the lever compared to my 91 and after taking a hit back there it won't open everytime. I can't remember if the door on my old 91 opened completely on its own.

I just put a little lube on the latch mechanism and hinges and it seems to be working a little better.

I am trying to decide if I need a new cable, latch, and spring.

Is my fuel door missing a spring?

Thanks

Your spring appears to be present and intact. I’ve had 4 80’s and the gas door normally opens an inch or two. As far as the effort needed to pull the release lever, I have no suggestions other than trace its entire length looking for obvious defects and kinks, etc…. iirc the spring is NLA.

me too

The spring is definitely not NLA.

This. I just ordered one a month ago. Is there any resistance when you close the fuel door ? If no, you need a new spring.

No resistance. I am ordering the spring and I am going to check my cable and see if there is anything I can find or clean and lube.

Thanks guys

The fuel filler door on both my 91 and 97 open to about 60 degrees when I release the catch.
The door itself is held in place by 2 small bolts and comes off easily for cleaning and lube. There should be little to no resistance in the hinge.
That little spring that @OGBeno mentioned is key.

my '95 certainly doesn't. 30* maybe? it "pops" open enough to tell its open, and swing it the rest of the way

no resistance on mine. i even question whether anything happened at all. glad the fuel door is on the same side, so i don't have to walk around to visually check the door released!

Spring ordered
Thanks for mentioning this subject. This thread lead me to checking out the gas door situation in this 96 I bought and commenced to tear apart. What I found is a hinge in serious need of lube and no spring, not even a piece of it there. Another spring on order…..
