Hi all
Planning to replace windshield soon. ... any tips or suggestions?

buy oem Lexus /toyota right?

Any tips to ask installer to figure if they know what they are doing?

thank you in advance

roadtrip to go see this guy 😀

Thank you

I had to have my 18 replaced. I wanted Lexus glass and the dealer to install (or at least stand behind the 3rd party). They would have to do the calibration if another company installed.. below is the breakdown - the other Lexus Dealer in the area was $200 more. Originally quoted $2391.65. Labor ended up being less than quote for a final charge of 1918.82 plus tax.

I just had my 2016 LC windshield replaced this week. I called Lexus and asked what third party they used, and used that firm (the dealers don’t replace glass themselves). In Florida it is a zero deductible insurance claim by law so my insurance company paid.

I used aftermarket glass (Pilkington) for free vs $530 to me for OEM. There are multiple threads on this topic if you search....there are only a couple of glass makers that Toyota and other car makers use (Toyota does not make glass themselves) and DOT requires replacement glass to be identical. Pilkington is a supplier of OEM glass to Toyota, but LC OEM happens to be from a different company currently. I chose to save $530 over not having a Toyota logo on the glass. Whetheryou pay up for OEMglass or not, the installer is the most important variable in my opinion. I agree that you should avoid Safelight.

Regardless of who you use for glass replacement, the lane detection cameras may need recalibrating after glass replacement. This is done at a dealer, and is covered as part of an insurance claim in Florida.

The front windshield is acoustic glass that's 2mm thicker than standard. Be careful which route you go. In my instance the insurance company cut me a check for the full invoice of the dealer. They initially wanted me to go through Satellite or another local. After pushing a little and reminding them the price of this car they had no issues with OEM.

As others said installer is critical. If they know what they are doing they will only use OEM trim and clips. My cruiser had a whistle on the freeway when I got it used, turns out it was the aftermarket rubber trim they used along the top of the panel. If there are leaks it can cause all kinds of electrical gremlins too.. I personally think installer is the single most important detail here.
That said, they also went with pilkington and it has multiple problems because of this. The rain sensor bracket isn’t as factory so the sensor doesn’t sit flush, the VIN window at the bottom isn’t lined up with the tag in the dash despite the panel being aligned otherwise, and it seems to chip easier than I’d expect of a toyota panel, though this is subjective. But at least it doesn’t leak.

Great that you got OEM glass paid for. Most insurance will only cover aftermarket if it is available, and you have to pay the difference if you want OEM glass. Note that aftermarket glass will also be acoustic glass of the same thickness and specifications as OEM, with the same features. The only difference besides the logo: a few people have claimed that the wiper defrost feature in the glass didn’t work as well with aftermarket vs OEM. Others disputed this. I believe there are only 4 makers of OEM glass in the world. Again, lots of past threads on Mud on this topic.

I forgot about that. Wiper defrost is basically useless on my pilkington, though I never had an OE panel to compare it to. It did almost nothing on mine the two times I needed it.

And yeah, there are only a few makers, but OEM HAS to meet Toyota’s specs precisely to get that logo and part number, but aftermarket can be built “good enough”. In this area my vehicle shows there is a substantive difference.

Interesting. My Pilkington lines up perfectly, no issues with VIN. I watched the replacement, all rain sensor/lane departure equipment was the original, nothing replaced except the glass and the wiring of the defrost. The Lexus dealer’s third party installer did use a universal strip at the top of the windshield, we will see if it causes noise but I doubt it. I think he would have hsed a universal strip if OEM Lexus/Toyota glass were used as well. The glue seals the glass, that strip is cosmetic and shouldn’t impact the water seal at all.

There were 9 chips or dsand damage points on my OEM windshield. All were small but I am very surprised at this. I’ve had more chips on this windshield than any vehicle I have owned... I wonder if the acoustic glass is softer, whether OEM or aftermarket.

I have replaced 6 windshields on 200s (have had a lot of 200s, for 11 years now) and used Safelite and never had any issues, at all. Not sure why the dude says avoid Satellite like the plague. My local guys have proven they do a fine job. There is a required calibration etc. as stated. I insist on all OEM everything, in SC there is no deductible on windshields and they can't make you use non-OEM parts.

The rain sensor itself is original, or I don’t see why they’d replace it. But the metal bracket that is bonded to the windshield and mounts the sensor doesn’t seem to stand off at the right distance and isn’t perpendicular. As a result the special clear tape has a bubble on one side despite two attempts to address the issue. (That little chunk of tape is $20.) On mine at least, the issue seems to be the bracket.

I posted a thread a couple years ago about my journey to track down the whistle.. with pictures of the offending trim. Basically it was a large round rubber strip that protruded and overlapped the glass and front edge of the roof. I ended up ripping it out and the whistle is gone, though now I have a slight gap there and am careful to keep it clean of leaves and junk.

I'm sure there is great variability on what parts are replaced outside of the glass that's broken. If you see my parts list above you'll notice that everything was replaced with new. I'd speculate that people with issues are more than likely getting installers that reuse what they can.

I’m on my 3rd windshield ‘13 LX. Original lasted 3 years. Both replacements were done at the dealer, first one had toyota logo, it lasted 1 year and got nailed by a tire chain. 2nd replacement done at the dealer is Pilkington, fit seems good only bummer is the heat strips don’t work, I had it replaced in the spring and ~5 months later when I went to use them, nothing. My Dealer wouldn’t fix it after that length of time.

I used plinkington on 13 lx570 for $372 with labor installed. Rain sensors work fine, yet to use the heat since our temps are warm.

Same here. I used safelite on my 4runner and current LX. LX cracked down the middle from pressure I guess, was no impact when it happened on the freeway. No issues at all a year and a half later. Pretty sure I paid around $400. I could use safelite 5 times for the price stated above. I asked the installer if we could compare the thickness of the old and new windshield on the LX after reading threads on here saying safelite glass was thinner. It was the exact same. Installer said years ago they could get away with it but modern day safety requirements don't allow windshield manufacturers to skimp. Perhaps he was blowing smoke idk.

How about this? This was a botched install that Safelite did on my 4Runenr which has the same mounting system as the 200

I ended up fighting them and they paid for $2,000 in bodywork to have the entire windshield frame repainted at a body shop.

So yes, **** Safelite.

Just had our windshield replaced. Safelite said I had to bring it in because they would need to recalibrate. 2 weeks out. Went down and they said “truck is lifted so we can’t recalibrate we’ll replace it then you have to to talk to the dealer”. WTF

Aborted with them and went to the dealer. On-site window replacement company came out, talked to my insurance for a while, sent a truck to my home a week later. Had a guru at LC window replacement do my truck. He was phenomenal. Didn’t break any of the white brackets. Sealed it up and no recalibration necessary.

He said recalibration is only required if they unplug the wires by the rear view mirror. His trick is to leave all the wires attached to the sensors, and remove the sensors from the brackets.

@04UZJ100 as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. I have USAA and they use Safelite, and I used them for my rear hatch window replacement. Luckily (maybe) the tech was a Toyota fan and was happy to be working on an LC. Also, OEM glass was provided, and the tech said that almost never happens, and it is better. Why I asked, and he said that it was the details like alignment pins, shims for the correct depth of the window during installation, etc.

Is what he said true? See the pic of the rear window and look closely for what he described, pins and shims. Do the aftermarket replacements have the same?

Does anyone have pics from the installation of a front windshield, OEM or aftermarket?
