Sorry, can't get any pictures, so I hope someone can understand what I am talking about.
On the drivers side, long side, of the axle tube with everything removed at the outer end, there looks like a brass oil seal without the rubber lip that sits inside the tube about 4 to 6 inches inside the tube from the outside. It has a hole in it at about the 3 O'clock position when looking at it like when looking at a clock mounted on the wall. It feels like it bumps up against a lip inside the tube to prevent it from going farther into the tube. Is this suppose to be there? If so, at what position is the whole suppose to be at? I can't find this seal in any of my manuals/parts list pictures.
Thanks.

I had a number of axles apart, but I cannot imagine what you mean. Is there a way to get a picture up?
thanks

I don't think I can get a picture of something that far inside a tube with the cameras that I have. I looks just like a brass oil seal without the rubber part that would seal.

It almost sounds like an old axle seal that someone pushed in there by accident.
In any case, there should not be a seal or a bearing or anything there.

Is it this?

That "brass" thing with the rubber seal is all one peice that is the inner axle seal.

This is a truck axle, but I'd imagine the 70's aren't much different.

I think your refering to a thin metal ring.
Used to stop any rush of oil [when sideling] from getting to the seal.

I took a look at one of my front Cruiser axles and it does have the bushings you mentioned also has holes in it at 12 and 3. I have included a few pic (sorry about the quality) the first one is looking in from outer end, the second one is looking through the axle and seeing the inside of the bushing on the other end (long end) both ends of my axle have these.

Cheers,

Michael

Yup, thats the one. So they belong. I wonder what position the holes are suppose to be at?

Both bushing on mine have the holes at 12 and 3 o'clock so I think that is where they go. That being said I don't think it matter where they are.

Cheers,

Michael
