Hello,

Not looking to start a discussion thread about which is better (Mini-truck, FJ60) but do want disk brakes up front. I read previous posts last night about coarse spline, fine spline, and all of the opinions, etc.
My 40 is a 1975, I live at the coast of NC, which has no hills, mountains or rocks, so not worried that the coarse spline is going to hold up. So, my question is, what parts do I need to be asking for to convert my front to disk with keeping my coarse? If someone would be kind enough to let me know I will post in the wanted section or if you have the parts shoot me a pm. Trying to keep the parts to a min weight for shipping. We have very few FJ's here so salvage yards do not even know what they are. Hope I have explained correctly (not that mechanical) what I am looking for and thanks in advance to any feedback.

from the knuckles out take everything and if you are takeing it all apart to get that you might as well take the birfs as they will go right on to your existing inner axles.what ever you use for your birf you are going to have to make sure it is compatible with your locking hubs.I would look for a complete mini truck(79-85) axle as this will give you everything you need includeing the birfs

easiest is to get a disc axle from 76-78, direct swap

79-83 has a different ratio

knuckles out is next either mini or 60 series.

any of the above should be $200-300. plus new bearings, seals and stuff.

going with MAF disc conversion using course outers, I think is more, but sourcing parts in a few years might be tougher than going to Napa and saying it's for a 60 series or mini truck.

The mini truck or FJ60 change over is the best, as others have mentioned you would take everything from the axel shafts to the hubs, buy a rebuild kit and get the master from the donor tuck (for the core). The disk break conversion kits use two piston calipers and solid a rotor vs. the four piston caliper and vented disk from the 60 or mini truck and as an added bonus you get the fine spline axel shaft with a stronger barenfield joint.

Were in NC are you, I live in Elizabeth City NC which is about one hours south of Norfolk.

Good Luck!

thanks for the feedback, the advice, photos and links help alot. One of the threads in tech talks about the mini truck and all of the mods to the steering, cutting tie rod, TRE's incompatability, etc and then other threads dont even mention it like it is no big deal. I do not want to get into a bunch of steering mods, mine has been great so far.

Corey, I live in Newport, which is down by Morehead City/Emerald Isle maybe 2hrs from you.

steering is simple get 79 or later arms and tie rod will bolt up or get the bushings so you can use the stock tie rod .you dont need the inner axles for your truck just the birfs .i have shipped the whole disc brake assembly in 6 flat rate boxes .about 60.00 bucks any where in us good luck
