Front axle housing compatibility?

Quick question are all the 80 series front axle housings compatible if your willing to potentially lose ABS with swapping in a 91-94 version? Or are there other differences or can you bolt in any 80 series housing? Did a bit of searching but came up snake eyes. Thanks. Cheers!
 
They should all be the same.
The locked and unlocked housings are obviously different but not in how they would be installed as an assembly onto a vehicle (I say this more for future viewers with different questions).
 
91 92 smaller brakes
93 -94 different drive flange birf length
95-97 thicker drive flange, longer birf
You could also use a 91 housing with correct diff, (locked unlocked) put the bigger brakes, thicker flanges and birfs.
You could also put an abs knuckle on non abs housing as well. Granted you have the abs wiring and stuff already. Birfs would need the tone rings as well.
All will bolt in, as mentioned if it is lock or unlocked housing the diff needs to match.

hypothetically if I’m planning on doing a part time kit in the future installing a 91-94 front diff would almost be advantageous in a way? Due to lack of extra ABS wiring and holes in the knuckles ( future plugging of sensor bungs ). Guess all you would need to get is the bigger brakes from a 95-97.

Another question are the early beefeilds longer to accept manual locking hubs? Or do you still have to modify the end of the shaft to accept the clip?

the early birfs are actually a weebit shorter for lockout hubs!

ABS on a heavy 80 is merely a suggestion, and quite a few of us get rid of ABS + LSPV for a much better stopping performance.
 
93-94 have the bigger brakes and some had ABS 😉
If they had lockers they had ABS.
Super easy to plug the ABS holes.

So I’m fairly new to 80 series ownership. Do you need to swap hubs on a early diff housing from a 95+ to run the bigger brakes or can you just bolt them on easy squeeze?

The only difference in the hubs is if there’s a ABS port or not.
The dust shield' are different as well.
 
I’m sure the google knows but how’s the compatibility on rear axle housings between years as far as swapping in a full float in a 91-92?

Make sure you get the emergency break cable from the donor ;)
 
The longer ends on the Birfs were to match up with the thicker drive flanges. This reduces the drive train slop caused by worn drive flanges. The thinner drive flanges were OK on part time 4wd vehicles but wore more quickly under constant use.
