blasting, dry or wet. Aside of dipping the frame in acid bath, how are you guys getting the rust behind those frame sections that are covered.

Specifically the frame of an fj40, is it ok to remove the rivets of the inner frame pieces and them weld them together after blasting?

it would make the frame stronger but wont we able to flex...

or use high grade bolts, or something. Ive got rust in my frame in those areas. Im evaluating possible solutions for it.

Live in jackson, Tn, and i have no areas that do dipping of frames.
Any ideas welcome.

nvm i found some answers, and bolts are not recommended... so i would keep looking
What's wrong with using bolts? Blasting the rivets out and separating the frame is the only way to get all the rust out. Reassemble with some grade 8 bolts and lockouts with red loctite and they will never go anywhere. In addition it will look awesome when your done.

i dont see anything wrong, but ive read so much no, no here that i just simply looked away, and to top that i found a place that would dip it at first, and then they decided not to. so im guessing this is the way i will proceed...

To remove the rivets quickly you need a powerful air hammer and good air compressor. I use a ir air hammer that is pretty big. I use a chisel bit to shear off the head. Then I take a bit with a point, put it in the middle of the rivet, and the air hammer blasts the rest of the rivet out the other side. Once I get a rhythm using this method it takes me about 30 seconds per rivet. Could probably have the frame split in a hour or 2.
