Seeking higher vistas
Myself and a friend spent Sunday through Wednesday in Ouray/Silverton/Telluride doing recon for a larger group next month, and producing GPS tracks, waypoints, photos and video for trailsoffroad.com.
Day one was driving from home (Colorado Springs) and Yankee Boy Basin. The afternoon rain and clouds put a slight damper on photography, but we got a few good pictures and clips.
We camped that first night in vicinity of Ironton Park, off of Highway 550 near the trailhead of Corkscrew Gulch. Corkscrew, Hurricane, and California Gulch were our target trails for Day 2.
Day 3 was the iconic Black Bear Pass into Telluride, and then Imogene Pass back to the Ouray side. A buddy from Canon City joined us on this day, arriving the night prior to run these trails for the first time.
The final day, we ran Governor Basin and the alternate (north on Yankee Boy) entrance to Imogene Pass. We found Governor blocked for 4-wheel vehicles near the top by a snow drift, likely to take another week or two to melt adequately (hiking, MTN bikes, and motorcycles can easily pass).
A great trip, despite the afternoon showers. Looking forward to returning in August with the Colorado Land Cruisers (Colorado Springs).
