Hey I was doin some searching for disk brake conversion and found this. I figured I would spend the same amount on new cylinders and shoes, plus a lot of pain in the ass of adjusting. So I'm gonna go to napa and autozone and price it out to see what the total cost would be. Now I have pmed the guy who wrote the article to see if it'll work on the front. I think it will. Anyone else got some 2 cents on this. Yes I know I'll still have the old splines and stuff. But it's a easy fix for the rear and front, and it gives me disk brakes.

Chuck,

That article above you mention is a painless way to add RDB's. Barry does not have any old drum stuff. He uses a simple GM weld-on race car bracket, available thru a race car supply catalog. Then he uses the rotors and calipers off of a 1500 series GM truck. There are many ways to skin this cat but it is surprisingly simple.
I still have drums on my '82 but have helped several guys install RDB's on their trucks. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cool, do you know if this same method will work for the front brakes?

Do the 1500 rotors have to be machined out to fit the LC? or do the slide right on?

Thanks, Chuck

WARNING! Working on brakes requires more than average mechanical ability.

Good article, But this picture scares me. Painted rotors, a very bad idea. Mechanical ability maybe, common sense

It will not work on the front.

Like Troll said, don't paint your rotors, at least not the contact surface.

I can't remember, Chuck. If they need to be turned, a machine shop can do it for about $10/rotor.

What have you seen done on the front. I know there has to be something cheaper out there than the kits that are sold for 7-800 bucks.

I always hear about the front conversion with toyota turck parts. You could find a car yard and get a whole front axle with brakes and all pretty cheap. I'd say take it a step at a time too though man. You need to do the back ones and make sure they work correctly before you worry about the front one IMO.

Ditto.
But why save money? Do it like the government: Why buy just on when you can get two at twice the price! :grinpimp:

Yeah I agree with ya richard. I was just curious if I could kill 2 birds with one stone with this set up. Yeah I definately need to save up the denero to get a front disk set up. Luckily with the rear I can buy piece by piece as I get the cash and I'm not out 500 bucks at one time. And like I said before hopefully this'll cost me around 300 bucks for the rear.

Haha...good to see you're payin attention El Presidente
