So i have hey buddy who has had two of his fj60s painted in TJ by this guy. I decided to give it a shot because it's only $4,000 to $5,000 depending on what needs to be done. I dropped it off down there and left it with him for about 35 to 40 days. Had to go to Thailand for work for a little while so it seems like a good time to just let him have at it.

I completely gutted the truck before taking it to him and all that was left and it was the driver's seat. The original color on my FJ was Freeborn red, and I loved it. However, the guy that owned it before me must have taken it to Earl Scheib or something and they just sprayed over the original paint, and it had started to peel. Knowing that I live in communist California, and they have crazy rules on everything, I decided to take it to Mexico to get it painted with a solid, stage one, old-school paint that is not water based.

This guy did a pretty phenomenal job for painting it in his garage with no paint booth. Yes, I know that's a bit crazy, but the quality of work I saw on the two other 60s that my buddy had painted gave me the trust I needed to give it a shot. I can honestly say, that for the money, it looks fantastic. Is it perfect, no. Could it be better in ways, totally. But where am I going to find somebody that is skilled enough to remove all of the windows without damaging the Chrome, and put them back in, without damaging the Chrome, as well as fix every dent and what little bit of rust she had?

Anyway, here are some shots of his work along the way, and the finished product. If any of you are in Cali and looking for a solid paint job for underk $5k...hit me up.

Back in the day I used to bomb down to TJ from LA by myself to get upholstery and paint done for bargain prices compared to local, but it's too much work now, and I don't feel secure in TJ anymore, plus the border crossing is more horrendous that ever...

But you can certainly get top quality work done, and you're right about the paint that's available there vs Kalifornia. No more single stage here unless it's on a new vehicle. I'm not a paint guy but my understanding is single-stage is more durable ?

Did you get some long-term Mx insurance while the truck is there?

I recently bought a Tacoma with single-stage white (built in MX  )

Truck looks great!

I agree with all you said.

The crossing was horrendous. I paid a cop $50 to let me go in the "ambulance" entery on the Otay crossing. San Ysidro is a joke. I dont have sentri so its bananas.

Yes, i took out a 90-day fill coverage and set the value around $35k-40k.

@SanDiegoFJ60

Excellent looking paint job!

I once took a 1st gen 4Runner down to TJ for paint. Then walked back across the border crossing at San Ysidro.

I stripped the vehicle down of most parts with only the driver seat and seatbelt remaining.

I was stopped by a Border Patrol agent going across because my 4Runner looked stolen in its current state.

He told me, "I hope it's there when you go back to pick it up."

It was and the work was superb.

Was the shop off Avenida de la Revolucion?

That looks like a pretty nice job!?

I have a 1981 Suburban project and need the same treatment!

However the older I get , the less adventurous I am and quicker to realize that other people can do things better/faster/cheaper than I can when I don't have a lot of experience in the field. Do you know of someone (or maybe you?!) who would be interested in doing kind of a valet service for TJ paint jobs? Escpecially if you have worked with these shops before and know what to expect/directions to give them. It would save me a huge learning curve...

Are you in San Diego?

Dropping it off isn't a problem but getting it back across the border is a long tedious way if you don't have a sentri pass.

Is the suburban drivable?

Totally driveable....I'm in north county

I will probably take the door panels off to work on them while its in the shop but it also needs upholstery on the seats so those will stay..I want to dynomat the begeebus out of it after paint and I have a carpet kit for it as well..

The wife is sketched out on me driving into Mexico (which I used to do when I didn't even have a license, haha) otherwise I would drive it down tomorrow. The other thing is I haven't dealt with car guys in about 25 years so someone who has gone through it recently and knows the landscape would be huge....

I have a call into Baja Bound for the insurance and Colima body shop for a rough price ... hopefully hear back tomorrow

Hi, Truck looks great.Did you supply the paint? Was speaking English a problem? Thanks, Mike

I think that's one of the big benefits going south...the paint available in So Cal has been neutered many times over so unless your getting it from AZ, your probably better off not supplying the paint...
