Hey guy, so after graham found himself a turbo, I figured I better not let that 70 run circles around me...or at least minimize it haha.
Anyways it made me start looking a little harder
I found a Td04l 13t with 150k kms, he said its not in the best shape, for $60
Is it worth rebuilding? Or getting at all?
I've read that it's a good fit up for a 3b. Not looking for crazy boost, just something to get those big 37's turning a little easier wherever I go

New to the turbo game and the learning curve is steep.

I think the TD04L will be too small for a 3B. It just bought one for my 2.4l diesel, which is a much better match. Folks have used the TD04L on a 3B, but it runs out of puff pretty quick.

Funny, I just came across a used vic ad with a guy selling a few turbos that might be more suitable for a 3B: http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/turbo-parts-_24015486 I'd talk to him and try to get more specs on the turbos; or even go look a them to get a better idea of what he is selling. The T3/T4 is promising, and is proven on the 3B: http://www.axtturbo.com.au/3b_34l_engine.html

The trick with turboing a 3B, is don't try to reinvent the wheel. So many people have turboed these engines, its just a matter of reading what has worked for others, and copying them.

Ok, I did read it was for smaller engines, but also read its work great for some people....
When I look at that ad I don't really know what I'm looking at....
I can build a manifold and have flanges made up, I can bend an fabricate the pipping for the exhaust and air, and most likely the oil lines, but I wouldn't mind buying then anyways.

When I look at that ad I don't really know what I'm looking at....

Contact the guy, and ask him for pictures of the three turbos, or if he's close meet him and take pictures/write down numbers yourself. Once you know the specs of the turbos better, you can ask on here and we can help you. Basically the prices hes asking are quite reasonable, so its worth looking into it a bit.

Also, if the Saab turbo the guy is selling is from a Saab 900 Turbo, it is pretty similar to the T3 turbos used on the Volvo 740/240s. Great turbo for a 3B I hear.

Ok awesome! Shot him a email, see what I hear back

Unfortunately no... I'll try again...then I'll call

Did ya get the turbo?

I picked up a single turbo off a 300zx car years ago pretty cheap....Cam thought it to be a little undersized?

No I didn't get it, just testing the waters here first

Did you use the turbo?

I chatted with Gerg since he seemed to be involved in all the turbo talks. He seemed to think the 15g would be a good match but maybe not spool up as early as something more along the lines of a 13t

I think I just accidentally bought a shiney stainless inlet flange for that turbo that won't fit mine. Want it?

Thanks.. got one...

Back looking again, talked to Gerg some more.....he still thinks that a TD04L-13t-6 is a good match for me. Spools early, maintains adequate boost at higher RPM's as well. Says he may have one for me.
thoughts?

Also got that turbo from graham :hillbilly: gotta make sure it's going to work well though....if it doesnt, an apple fritter will sufice

Here it is, it has a weird exhaust housing on it. It has 7 bolts where I think the Garret's have 5. Other than that it seems to be in decent shape. No slop

Graham,

You could try chopping that downpipe after the flange and tig welding a stainless elbow on there. Stainless can be tig'd to cast but for the record I don't know how it will like the constant vibration and heat cycling. Worth a shot I suppose.

The other option would be to build a new downpipe from scratch. A flange might be available on ebay..... after that all you would have to do is build a downpipe that incorporates the wastegate dump.

I could for sure make up a much simpler down pipe using the existing downpipe. bend up some stainless and a watercut flange
do you know any of the AR values?

I don't, couldn't find the numbers on it. Looked pretty similar size to the Garret turbos though. I'll bring it to the next meet. Next week maybe?
