Where are your other exhaust hangers/mounts? Any issues?
As I will be reinstalling my exhaust I want to deal with any issues now. I have a 3 inch flex pipe welded on just after the turbo, how close to this does my next hanger need to be?
I installed the flex pipe because I ended up with a crack in the exhaust up near the turbo.

Your swap is commin along great!

Hope these help. I snaked my exh past the transfer case (inside frame rails) down the passenger side more or less straight shot with a 90 degree kick at the tail.

Exh. drops down off the turbo vertical, three bolt flange to 90 degree then back (first pic) Flex joint on the horizontal. The braket near the flex joint bolts to transfer case.

I thought it best to move the brake lines move to the drivers side to avoid any heat soak.

Many KMS and lots of wheelin and no cracks or problems.

Exit shot.

Audi hanger (had it lying around)

I have since replaced and modified the frame but the exhaust is still more or less the same.

Last pic is showi'n off a bit but its a damn fine pic

I also ran a 3" system past the transfer. I had hard pipe from the turbo to just behind the transfer, hangers on the bell housing and on the back off the transfer case, then I had a 14"long 3"flex pipe.
I had no rattles and no cracking at all. I had some tight clearances, but no problems at all.

For your scenario, I would put a hanger to the chassis as close to the flex pipe as possible

Slowansteady's pic of the hanger is similar to how I made mine. make sure you wrap the round bar under the exhaust and weld it on, if its not wrapped under the pipe, it can tear out.

Thanks guys that is very helpful. Thanks slowandsteady! Do you have any close-up pics of it coming off the turbo and bolting to bellhousing? So that tab just sits under one of the big bolts? I thought if I did that the tab could rip off...Also I did not think the 3inch would fit by the transfer case, I would hate to have to move the brake line.
But I think it is one of the cleanest exhaust routings if it can work. A friend had it like that years back but with a 4 speed, I thought with my 5 speed there would not be enough room (will have to look again).
Mudgudgeon do you have any pics of it going by the transfer case?

So I guess I will weld a tab up near the flex pipe that goes to the bellhousing? How about making a piece out of 3 inch pipe (bolt it to the bellhousing) I can kind of slide over the downpipe, then use a clamp to hold the two in place? Just like the stock setup maybe?
If there are more pics that would be awesome, really helpful :)

This should help... I have since removed the muffler you see in the pic. (and installed flex joint). Straight pipe and turbo is quiet enough for me. Here is the exh. bolting to the Transfer Case.

My 60 has the vacuum shift case, getting the pipe through there was really tight (2.5") yours should have more room if its manual shift.

Im not entirely sure the brake line HAD to be moved.... I feel the exh, doesnt get all that hot. Perhaps others will chime in on this. Keeping it straight and simple seemed best, that "round about, inside-outside, there and back again" routing from the factory system is nuts. imo

Hmm wow looks like you have tons of room, any problem with the exhaust being so close to the floorpan?
Someone mentioned this could cause rust? With the tab that is bolted to the transfer, it looks like you have another piece welded on the exhaust that the tab is welded to, is this to prevent cracking?
I agree muffler not needed, I have not been using one.

I kept my stock support off the bellhousing, figured I didn't need to reinvent the wheel. Works fine with the 2.5" o.d. pipe I have as a downpipe from my turbo. I have the flex pipe after the first elbow past the bellhousing since that was the only section of straight pipe before my muffler to put it in my configuration. I don't like the flex pipe being where it is since its vulnerable to damage and isn't as effective at dampening vibration.

Seeing snsBJ's photos of the pipe run inside the frame rails I think I might eventually redo mine. Considered going that way but clearance looked tight with the brake and fuel lines, maybe a heat sheild would do :meh:.

My hj61 I ran the down pipe then put the flex joint under the cab. Not enough room up by the turbo to put it there. I have a hanger right after the joint. No hangers between the turbo and the joint

jzilla PM'd me about my rear bumper and asked for some pics. I can't take credit for the design because a fellow mudder came up with it and sent me all the pieces to build it. His handle on mud is "fourrunner".

Bumper was perfectly cut and SO easy to build. I modded it to be an air tank and built the swing out from scratch.

Fourrunner's bumper is a great starting platform. Cheers Mark.

I guess this isnt a hi-jack when the OP asks for "off topic" stuff?!

I thought that looked familiar! Saw it on the 60 forum...
I was thinking of using that same bumper.
Thanks!
Finished a bracket up today that goes from the bellhousing to the exhaust, will post pics later.

Slowandsteady and mudgudgeon, do you notice any effect from the heat on the floorpan or undercoating where the pipe passes by the transfer case? How long have you both had this set-up. I can indeed fit a 3 inch pipe in there on further inspection, but I am concerned about the heat causing rust. For now I will throw on the exhaust I had before, but at a later date I may redo it as I don't like how my routing goes below the tranny crossmember (although I don't hardcore wheel much!).

It is difficult to comprehend that a 3B is underneath there

Yeah I know.... I try to never be in a rush for anything.

No rust issues so far. I also wash my cruiser with OCD like frequency, after every wheelin trip her underbits get a squirt with the pressure washer. I also use that yellow gooey Napa rust proofing goo once a year at the end of summer.

Slow....thanks for the kind words...they are easy to build. Just built three in the last few weeks for locals. Enjoy!! Nice looking rig, btw.

damn sexy dude .. would you be so kind and share your thoughts about those new MTR tires ..

Im happy with the MTR's. Quiet, balance out just fine, tough, and traction is great. I just bought another set for my pickup.

I sliced one very deep in a knife like edge.... still holds air. Had it been a BFG i think its life would have ended right there.
