Spare vehicle makes fleet management much easier. Extra drivers and spare credit cards help a lot too!

Urgency to repair the down vehicle is key. The spare is no help if you have more than one down.

I have been under a vehicle I needed for my morning commute extracting a broken bolt with a torch while snow was blowing sideways around me. Not interested in doing it again.

I daily drive my 2003 with 303,000 miles. It has been as reliable as any car I know.

My second car is a 1976 Bronco that is driven frequently because I live in SoCal near the ocean and nothing beats a top down Bronco ride up the SD coast!

Mistake indeed, lesson learned. I have nothing against EVs, but hybrids seem to be a solution looking for a problem. Mpg was the exact same with the dead battery vs replacement. 12-15mpg with my minimal commute is better than throwing a car away every 5-10 years.

I have everything against EVs. The resources required to produce one are immense. It takes 20 years of driving an EV to pay off it's carbon debt, so called. And, they're gonna overload our electric grid like nothing else. It's a scam, if the government actually cared about fuel emissions they'd be all for little diesel, fuel efficient, and robust cars like the old VWs.

The daily, and the "spare" (don't let them hear that)!
Bought the green one in 2007 in AZ with 70K miles (I'm the 2nd owner), daily drove it until 2018 when it went in for an overhaul (paint, interior, mechanical). Was going to need something to drive for a few months and I'd already been thinking about something to split the miles with. Found the white one in CO, original owner, 124K miles. I'd love to say I daily drive one but the reality is that when both are fully operational, I rotate between the two regularly and love driving them for different reasons. The green one is a beast, the white one is super nimble in comparison (about 2K lighter).
They're both 1999, the green one now has ~245K miles and the white one has ~165K. Frankly, I don't want to drive anything else.
Note: Having two of the same year is great for spare parts but also expensive for upgrades! :)

Daily the LC, the 16 Tundra Pro is the "nice weather truck". It only has 37k miles on it.

Its not one time let me down. 263k and id bring it to Florida right now if I needed.

Although it has a TON of maintenance done on it.

Yeah... I'm diggin the color of the Tundra.

Got my LC back from the shop today after replacing the drivers side tie rod. On the bright side, I found a decent and honest local indie shop. My bank account has validated why doing my own wrenching is important, and driving a rental has reminded me why new vehicles aren’t my thing.

Drove a VW Atlas for a couple days, and can’t believe how big those things are while driving like a car. Kids could hardly get out in parking lots due to the width of the car and length of the doors.

This is exactly why I have spares. I don't stress if one is down or one needs X service. I have something I can reliably swap into without much worry.

wife’s sienna, two bikes, turo and an enterprise in walking distance 😂

Acquired this low mileage project last year. Nothing like an s for a daily. Sold her recently because I don’t really drive much right now.

This is the nice weather rocket. Too fast for a daily, imo, even six years later. This is a very fun last year of the RWD Amg wagons. Only 59 imported in 2013, 209 total. She is a stock model with 550+hp/600tq biturbo V8

All of them have been reliable but the lx is my daily, and still mint with 263k. I’ve never been stranded from a mechanical, from any vehicle I’ve owned so oftentimes the car is just down for maintenance.

It’s like having a dog, a second dog isn’t twice the work since the infrastructure is already in place. At least that’s how I justify it 😂

Man I wish that was my experience! Each of mine is as needy as a new puppy. Whenever I jump in one that I haven't driven in a while, I have the "oh yeah I've gotta fix that" thought, or the "oh, I guess that needs to be fixed".

To be fair to myself, I am incredibly picky about my cars and try to keep them as perfect as possible.

I’m super picky too. There’s always something that needs fixed on each of them but at least one of them is always good enough to get me where I gotta be.

I'm at 231k, and it's my daily. 11 mile one-way to work. I couldn't imagine owning it and letting it sit.
