For those that daily - do you have a backup? (2 Viewers)

I've been in 100 series (LX470, Land Cruiser), 22 years now. Never needed a back-up vehicle. After all, they're considered the most reliable vehicle ever built.

But then, I know how to "properly" maintain them. Know how to inspect and perform PM, is key.

I did once have alternator fail, while away from home. Luckily, I was at Toyota parts department when it did. Grab a new battery, to get home and an alternator to toss in once home. I now know, to listen for sound of failing ALT.

I did have. Two flat tires, stop me. But I'm ready and able with spare, jack & tool kit...

I do have a bicycle, back-up.

I used to daily the 100LC and had a camry as a sort of backup. Used it really as a backup during extensive modifications and timing belt/front half overhaul. Then replaced Camry with a Tesla a couple of years ago. Now Tesla is the daily and 100 is the weekend warrior/road trip/tow vehicle 🙂.

I'm saving it from short trips 😉.
 
I'm searching for the perfect GTI, sold many of them thinking I'll find the one, never did. My last one was a 5th gen, replaced coils every 2nd traffic light, plastic leather looking seats that were awful, a sunroof from hell..

My 2.8 VR6 MK4 was a very nice one, sold BC I'm an idiot.

The perfect backup car: MK6 or 7 GTI BASE, no packages, manual, no nav no sunroof, plaid cloth manual seats, 4 doors preferable but no must. Silver color yes a must... No tunes or other aftermarket crap from PO. Where are you? I'm looking for you!

In the meantime, my LC is my daily and I'm happy with it. I spend lots of money on it, not because it's problematic, but because I'm in MUD reading too much:bang:
 
Having another vehicle in the household to drive has been hands down the biggest stress reliever when repairs come up with my primary vehicle. Before I got married I had an E30 bmw and a Saab 9-5 wagon, Russian roulette which one went down, but the other always saved the day.

I've got you guys beat.
When my 40 series needs some work done (because Landcruiser's don't break-down, they just occasionally need servicing) I have my wife's MG midget to drive. ...pure masochism. It's maybe one notch up on the reliability scale from an Italian or French car.

Land Cruisers don’t wear, they marinate.
 
I have been looking at Volvo C30s for this reason. My last civic was great for some things, terrible for others, and soured me on components that needed dealer servicing. A two door manual hatch sounds fun.
I drove an 8th gen base model civic for 6+ years. Leaked and burned oil, blew a head gasket once, water pump went, front struts went. It always got me home regardless. Frequent oil changes and air filters and it ran like a beast.

I made the mistake of buying a used civic hybrid back when they were a roulette game. Mine ended up needing a new hybrid battery, and was straight up straight up dangerous when I had to merge into traffic. When I finally paid $2k to change the battery, it did the exact same thing - awful car. Sold it for $3k, and it was flawless inside and out, besides the terrible powertrain.
 
My 100 has been my daily for the past 15 years (minus a few months when my daughter had it as her daily). I’ve always had a second something. Currently, it’s the ‘84 Pickup (just drove it to Home Depot this am)

I love vehicles and love having vehicles that fit a role well. I've had a series of vehicles for given roles. With the LC and my Mustang I feel like I've got the dream team. Something fast that can dance to daily when the weather is good coupled with a "built" offroading truck for playing on the trails and crushing the snow. Short of getting rich and looking at euro stuff I can't see changing this lineup.

Well hey, buying a hybrid anything was your mistake. ICE ftw

Mistake indeed, lesson learned. I have nothing against EVs, but hybrids seem to be a solution looking for a problem. Mpg was the exact same with the dead battery vs replacement. 12-15mpg with my minimal commute is better than throwing a car away every 5-10 years.
 
I bought a used 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid when I was commuting 120 miles a day. One of the best, over engineered cars I’ve owned. 40mpg and it has 230k miles and it’s honestly been more reliable than the 100s. I gave it to my daughter for college.

Hybrids make a lot of sense to me. You aren’t tied to the electric grid.
