I’ve been happily driving a 98 LC for about 18 months, and feel like I’m always “just about done” with maintenance or repairs. Earlier this month it was rear brakes and pads, today I discovered a broken inner tie rod. This is after a full front end suspension rebuild last fall, where I finally felt like I was on top of wear components.

With the tie rod, I’m having a shop do the work for the first time since it’s cold as heck out. I’m also parking it until it’s fixed, to avoid getting stranded with the kids in the car. I rented a car today, to not get everyone stranded.

Question for everyone - is your LC/LX your primary vehicle? We also have an Outback, but no “spare” vehicle. I’d be interested to know what your backup vehicle situation is, for those choosing their hundy as a primary vehicle.

I’m Brian, I’m a Cruiserolic. I have an LX to drive when the 100 is down. Or do I have a 100 to drive when the LX is down. I can’t decide.

I have thought about getting a second LC as a spare/backup vehicle. So far I have convinced myself that I shouldn't do this as it is most likely the first sign of addiction.

You think THAT is the first sign of addiction?!

I have 200 and 100. You bet.

Is this?

This has been a useful take from several of you. Some have many vehicles, any of which could be backups. How many are running without backup transportation of some sort? “It’s the only vehicle I drive” doesn’t mean there isn’t a second or third vehicle around that you COULD drive in a pinch. That’s my question - do you have a backup?

And a little deeper - I’m never getting rid of the LC. Just thinking along the lines of it becoming a weekend rig vs daily, or having the secondary be the weekend rig that could work in a pinch.

100 is our "house vehicle". It's my daily but my Ms jumps in it 95% of the time when she goes out.

I also have a W123 300D that I drive around the immediate area or she"ll drive it if I'm in the truck. It's a car I'll probably never sell. One because it's worth noting against my investment, but it's my favorite car I've ever owned.

She's got an 86 El Camino with a crate motor. It hardly leaves the garage, will be going up for sale soon, she wants a late model Tacoma.

I have a 97 SC300 factory 5 speed that hardly leaves the garage. And a 91 560SEL that we'll take on dinner dates or if we have company and I don't wanna move the dog's Hammock out of the way in the back seat of the 100.

And a BMW Rockster that never leaves the garage.

When I was younger and dumber, my dad told me if you're going to have a project car, you need a second car you can always depend on. So I have 5 project cars.

My favorite of the bunch might be the SC300, or the W126, or the LX. You got good taste in cars!

I currently only have the LX but as my commute is 150 kms per day (90% hwy) it can add up in fuel costs plus wear and tear; I'm looking at getting an older Honda civic si or Acura tsx later this year, something fun to drive with a manual and that is good on fuel.

I have been looking at Volvo C30s for this reason. My last civic was great for some things, terrible for others, and soured me on components that needed dealer servicing. A two door manual hatch sounds fun.

My LX has been my daily for 8.5 years now. I've usually had at least 1 other car during that time but they're always special purpose. I've had my 60 for over 3 years now and the others are usually track cars but could be driven on the street. If I am ever down for maintenance that takes more than a day, I will drive the track car or my wife's car and I'll drive her to work.

Yep.
