Brake Cleaner = Phosgene Article

I found this article in my latest American Iron magazine and found the link on another jeep website. I also have this as a pdf if anyone wants it. Print it and share it with anyone you know that welds!
I think Phosgene is actually Mustard gas. From what I could find out, any chemical with a "tri" something or other will be a deadly combination if heated and inhaled. On the EPAs hit list of chemicals to ban.

This may not be in the right forum, so feel free to move it.

Thanks for the heads up.

This should be posted up in the tools section for sure, maybe even a sticky

i've never even thought of using brake cleaner.
xylene is the cleaner of choice.

Thanks! I just ran out and read all the labels on my Brake Parts Cleaner.

great article, spread the word...

Just occurred to me that this could MOST LIKELY actually happen to those who weld on the trail specially if a brake line goes bust and something brakes...

Thanks for posting it.. I don't know how to weld but did buy a welder and have been teaching myself how to weld... !!!

This should be bumped regularly with everyone picking up those cheap migs nowdays. If in any doubt I'll wear a mask under my helmet even when welding galv, cumbersome but better safe than sorry.

Wow good info to know. I have done this and fortunately got lucky... no more of that!

I wasn't aware of that and I weld all the time! I'm gonna go buy a welding mask now! Thanks!!!

Just forwarded the link to 6 people I know who will each pass it on to another 4-5 before the day is out.

Thanks for the bump, guys!

damn thanks for posting and the bumps, i have used brake clean before, to clean my metal before welding, but usually use xylene.

This is sure interesting. I am finding by the comments here that a lot of people don't use respirators. I simply don't put a welding helmet on
any more unless I'm wearing my respirator with overshoulder breather tubes. I found that I got sick and my sinus's were getting seared
with soot and grime. My mask is less than $100 and the filters run about $35 per pair. Small price to pay. My thoughts go out to this
poor guy.
