He was commenting on the reason why Gunney's rig is set up from the factory to do what you want your truck to do. Gunney is in the middle east. Different specs on his truck compared to ours. US DOT regs require that from the factory, a vehicle is capable of activating no more than four forward-facing primary lights (headlights, driving lights, fog lights, etc) at any one time. So, low beams + high beams + fogs = six lights = no bueno from the factory. Still, that doesn't explain why we can't activate the fogs with just the parking lights. That would be a nice feature to have, I agree.

Well, comparing my 2000 EWD and my 2004 there are differences. The Pin17 mod applies to both however.

We still need a mod that lets us run the fogs (OEM or aftermarket), using the OEM stalk, without the headlights or parking lights on. Bueller?

Well, I'm electrically-challenged, so take this for what you paid for it... but I think it's a switch configuration issue tied with coupling the fog light power source to be downstream from the low beam power source. Would be interesting if there is different part numbers for the stalk switch between mid-east and US trucks. These scans are from my 2000 LC EWD, but likely the same issue for all US-spec trucks?
So in this post is the fog light circuit (fog light diagram0001.pdf), and as stated previously, simply removing pin 17 and grounding it will complete the circuit for the fog light relay, bypassing the need to go through the "low" switch to complete the ground. It certainly "seems" like this should fix the problem, until you read the description (fog light description0001.pdf) that the fog light relay is only closed when 3 things happen: light control sw at HEAD position, dimmer sw at LOW position and fog sw at ON position. Removing pin 17 and grounding it (essentially grounding pin 10) only fixes the second condition. You need to look at the power source in the fog light diagram, specifically the HEAD (LH-LWR) 10A fuse in the upper left that powers the FR FOG relay. It "appears" from this diagram that it is always receiving power, but it's not. SEE NEXT POST.
Edit-> apparently pdf files don't show up as attachments on the mobile app, so you may want to use a web browser to see the wiring diagrams.

On the headlight diagram, the fuse in question, the 10A HEAD (LH-LWR) that powers the fog relay (shown here in the upper left of pg 86 in headlight diagram 20001.pdf), only has power when the combination switch is in either the "flash" position (pin 8 on C16 - to flash the high beams) or when the low beams are on (pin 13 on C16) - unless of course you've done the high-beam pin 17-to-ground mod in which case it also has power in high-beam mode. These two pins close the HEAD relay (at the top right of page 87 in headlight switch diagram0001.pdf), thereby providing power to the 10A HEAD (LH-LWR) fuse, thereby providing positive power to the fog light relay. So the fog light relay is only powered when the head lights are on.
So it seems you have to decouple the LH low beam from the fog light circuit, and provide the fog light relay it's own power path to be able to use the factory fog switch on the stalk to turn on the fogs without ANY headlights being on.
Since I live in AZ, and we get fog once every 12 years, I probably won't be doing this mod...
so someone else with have to provide either ignition-fused power or constant-fused power to the red and light blue pin 1 wire going into the FR FOG RELAY. I "think" that would solve the problem.
The FR FOG relay is located on the driver's side (LH) kickpanel, top left. It might be interesting trying to provide a new power source for it.
Probably more room to intercept the 1C pin 3 lead coming out of the HEAD LH LWR fuse on the bottom of the engine bay JB and provide power to it in the engine bay from somewhere.

Hey guys any updates to this? Now that I have some lights that may actually be worth switching on, I am interested in gaining their independence... Haven't done anything to that end though other than search & read, and this thread appears to be the definitive fog light independent switching thread.
My fogs already have a separate relay, currently using the switched positive from the stock fogs, so in the simplest case I am wondering if I could just route a wire from the switch to this new relay, then bypass all the stock stuff altogether. Just thinking out loud on that

Any update on this? I'm looking for ways to wire up some of Nick's LED light bars using the stock fog stalk.
I've got a retrofit harness but want to make it so the stalk can independently control the light bar without being coupled to the headlights. Did you figure out how to do this?
