From those who DON'T have factory floor mats, what have you used for heat-proofing the floor to keep the tranny and exhaust heat from cooking you out?

I have thought of using some of that shiny foil-sided bubble insulation on the floor of my Pig, but I'd have to cover it with rubber mats to cut down the shiny glare.

Then I thought, what about just normal rubber matting? That alone might be enough to keep the heat down, and I could trim a big piece as necessary to fit.

Right now, the driver and center floor are VERY hot to the touch, and I'm sweltering in my Pig from the radiant heat. The heaters are shut off under the hood.

my floor used to be really hot. One problem I had was my Carb was bad. It was spraying alot out at idle. I painted my underside above the muffler, pipes and tranny hump with rust bullet a silver color paint. New carb and that paint seem to have helped out alot. Oh yeah results may be diffrent on a metal tub, i've got fiberglass.

for floor mats i'm just using a cheap walmart geniric mats(kind of a husky look).

I did remove one of the metal heat shields and I'm thinking I don't need it at this point.

My Pig does the same thing. I just coated the floors w/ POR15 for rustproofing and in the spring will coat with SecondSkin Damplifier. SecondSkin is a advertising vendor on MUD.

Yeah, I've already POR-15'd the floor.

Secondskin? Dynamat? I'll check them out.

I tried the CCOT floor insulated floor pad and while I'm not a big fan of some of the CCOT stuff, this worked pretty well. Not too expensive and cut correctly. Seemed to cut down a lot of the heat from the headers and exhaust pipe that are right under my feet and seat in 100+ weather this summer. While it was tolerable...I think A/C will be a spring project. ;)

Buy a right hand drive truck:D

lizardskin

was watching the boob tube this weekend and saw a clip about a product called 'lizardskin', just google the name. it is a ceramic coating. supposed to to cut heat, water resistance, chemical resistance, etc. dont know anyone who has used this product personally. down fall - $. still might be worth checking out though.

I helped a buddy put down a new floor in a weight room back in college and he had a couple of the 1/2" thick, high density rubber mats left over. I cut them to fit the front foot wells and the rear bed of my 40. They blocked the heat and dampened the road noise with the extra weight. They were also easy to take out and put back in when the ruck got filled with mud or sand. I think the mats are called "gorilla mats", used as flooring in gyms and weight rooms.

i've seen stuff that they sell on summit that lays on top of the exhaust pipe and you just use SS hose clamps (big ones) to secure it... other then that, bedliner and maybe some thicker soles in your boots

i used the CCOT foil backed mats along with there aussie floor mat and it realy helped. i can now rest my ankle against the tranny hump without the fear of a burn.

I'm doing my 40 now. It's a fiberglass tub. Spayed interior with bedliner, then foil faced insulation, then carpet. The underside is getting some spray on undercoating, but I imagine if I get any on the exhaust that I am in for some stink. Does anyone wrap their headers? Would that help?

I used a combo of the thick neoprene type foam material that you use on your shop floor to cut down on wear-and-tear on the body + diamond plate pattern rubber topping ( https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=92626 ) cut into floor mats and viola.. no more issues. looks clean and works great and very affordable.

I used to try to make my dog to stay still in my 40, she wouldn't stop pacing in the back, boy did I feel guilty after a 45 minute ride,ha.Dynamat, then cut gym mats sure did help, and cut about 60% of the noise down.Dog was not nearly as "jumpy"

I know alot of people use the Dynamat, but which one? Have you been to the site? There is Dynaliner, DynaPad, Extremeliner, Hoodliner, Xtreme Dynamat, Original Dynamat, Dynaplate, and last but not least DynaShield. I haven't priced it yet, but it looks expensive? I definately have to do something though, cause with the top on its almost unbearable in the summer time! My little 327 cooks my 40 like a freakin 100K BTU furnace! I think this is one of the things to add to my list of to-do's for winter time along with bumpers, spare tire carrier, and tying the roll bar into the frame.......

summit has several things you can do, first I would find out what the heat source is (muffler, cat, etc).

Then, instead of coating the floor with stuff, I would wrap the pipe, cat, or muffler with something. Summit sells wraps for mufflers and cats, header wrap can be used on pipe to lower the heat it gives off quite a bit.

Out of curiosity... when/how many miles do you change your transmission and xfer case fluids? And, would good oil conduct heat better than broken down oil or even water in Badass' case? :D

Sorry for the hijack.

Stuff a Chevy V8 in a 40 with no insulation and its gonnna be hot. i don't think fluids are gonna make any difference. Header wrap might help, but I think the firewall/floor has to be insulated to keep that heat out. Also, at least on my conversion, I ended up with several unplugged holes in the firewall where old wiring harnesses went thru or whatever. Just putting duct tape over those made a huge difference.

FWIW... I had a thread here on Mud a long time back about using the fabric wrap, muffler wrap type products - and did a bit of web research on that product - and it seems the consensus is that using that product will rot your tubing in the end.

when I got my rig, I could not even wear sandals due to the heat.. now, with my above creation, I 'could' go shoeless. solved all my hot to the touch issues in the drivers compartment due to headers and muffler running right up under the floor boards in drivers and passengers side.
