Our game room is a typical bonus room construction above a 3 car garage. The ceilings are 10' with clipped corners resulting in 9' walls. As a result you can walk behind all the walls which gave me an idea.

I'm sure it's not unique but I had a cabinet shop build a recessed box for the TV which is about 6" deep. While we were at it we added a full width shelf, 18" deep, and four 18" deep drawers. I put a header above and below the studs (even though they are non-bearing) and proceeded to cut them out. I didn't think to take any photos of the hole.

It's great that it doesn't take up any interior room. Again, I'm sure others have done similar but there seems to be so much interest in flatscreens in the forum right now I thought others might get some ideas from our cabinet.

Here are a few photos.

Not a new or unique idea, but well done none the less!
I worked for a home theater company in ATL for years and we used dead space for components all the time. Just make sure to insulate around the outside of that cabinet so you don't cook the components in the summer. ;) Nice work.

very nice

but where is the built-in kegerator? :)

Looks excellent and not to be Debbie Downer, but as I learned from our own theater which the previous home owner built (and is similar to yours) - building the case to fit a specific TV can be a pain down the road. I've got a cut out for a 36" CRT that not much else fits in.

I considered that as well but I looked at the measurements on several 50" screens and quite a few would fit. The opening has about an inch gap all the way around but I think anything from 1/2" to 2" would also look fine.

We have a screen in the theatre. Not sure if screen size is an issue when you replace the projector. Hope I don't have to find out.

might as well finish off the wall with some built in bookshelves...looks good

Funny you should say that. The wall that isn't in the photos, at the foot of the pool table, is 16' wide and we plan on getting the guy to build some cabinet bases with bookshelves on top. Plan on building those into that wall in a similar fashion. We just wanted to see how well he did on the TV cabinet first.
