Anyone tried to paint flat black before? I was thinking of spraying a good poly. primer down...then clearing it some how...semi-gloss or flat clear to protect it. Looking for any sugguestions...is there any paint company that makes a single stage flat black? I have some painting experience....and the tools to do a home made job.....any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as normal automotive paint stores go, I've only found flat black in rattle cans. You can add a flattening agent to any paint, but they could never tall me how much it would take.

I probably sound like a broken record - but Rustoleum Professional flat black is amazing stuff. It is really hard to get it to have runs, and it covers great and hides imperfections. It's super durable too. It comes in rattle can but it may also come in gallons.

Ive painted anything from my grill, to my Axle housings with it.

rustoleum is good with Mineral Spirits. Acetone in the mix will help with dry times.

5280HAWK.....with is the mixture? Do you use mineral spirits, acetone, paint thinner?
Thanks

I've only used it in the rattle can.

I'm going to probably spray some Rustoleum flat black this weekend on my frame, axles, and roll bars. I'll post up how it turns out. I already sprayed Rusto white primer mixed about 10%. I'm not a painter but don't expect this to look like a painter did it either. Oh yea, it comes in quarts.

Don't know if you have a farm and fleet store near you or not. Anyway Valspar makes a single stage implement flat black . It is very good schitt. My father in law bought it to paint his '51 chevy using spray bombs:eek::eek:. Looks fantastic.

I painted my underside after a thorough cleaning. I used Rustoleum primer as the first coat and black semi gloss as the second coat. I used both spray cans and brushed on in tight areas. I am very pleased with the result.

All the Matte Black Hot rodders are laying down the John Deere Matte as they haven't caught on and the price is low.Holds up well. This is not rattle can.We just layed a 52 Fordomatic and a couple wide rally stripes on my sons PU.Shot over that Fordomatic after a sweet real fire flame job.Owner/Painter wanted ol school.Layed some sick pinstriping, too.

I don't know what you are painting flat black but this is kind of cool:

This is a professional skate boarder who painted his brand new Chevy Tahoe flat black, I have really been thinking about doing it to my 80 :D

74fjsemistock......Thanks that helped alot....just need to track down where to get it now...thanks...as soon as I do my 40 I will throw up some pics

Just remember, spraying flat is even more tricky than gloss. It's unforgiving, and if you get any dirt inclusions, orange peel, etc, ya can't buff it out. Any buffing=creating a shiny area.

thats rob dyrdek's rig. "murdered out" lol. i painted my car flat black and also did an old willys coupe. house of colours flat black primer. its awesome spraying stuff! i reccomend it. we didnt clear tho. loses the hot rod effect.

Any white-trash hot rodder will tell you that flat black is the s***!

got a local guy in Scaboro to do body kit and paint my 90 Celica GTS

Satin Black aka flat black

some peeps like it ,I loved it,called it the shadow, did the rims also, looked SICK.
Was thinking of doing the cruiser also satin also.
The issue I found(maybe wasn't sealed proper) scratches IE keys rubbing below door lock would leave a shiny spot.
