Flagpole Knob - Route (1 Viewer)

I am planning on taking the family to the area in a couple of weeks. I have read all the info on here and other sites regarding routes and have bought the Nat geo map.

I plan to enter via route 33, skidmore road as suggested. I am looking for feedback on a Westward route off of the mountain, I rented a cabin in WV and want end up on that side. Also any advice on good quick hiking trails.

We recently had a 600+ Acre forest fire up here on union springs road. Luckily, it didn't make it all the way to our house, but it was smokey for a few days. Right now, union springs road is open and looks like it will not be closed. Some of the other roads off of it have been closed to hiking and hunting, but these remain closed to vehicles all the time anymore. Specifically, mud pond and peach trail.

I have not made the trail over into wv before, but sounds like fun. As others will tell you, make sure to stay on forest service roads. Have fun!

Skidmore Fork/Dunkle Hollow Road: Well documented road nothing technical some rocks.
85A: Same as above. I now understand what @bkfj40 was referring to about staying on the forest service roads. Lots of little turn offs that were obviously illegally made. Wish people would understand that stuff like that is what gets trails shutdown - we already are very limited to what we have in this area.
Reddish Knob Road to 24 to Sugar Grove: Some of this was paved. I did enjoy the scenery and ride on 24 - basically a flat fire road with a few creek crossings.

How was the cabin you stayed at? Looking to make the same trip with the wife and kids.

@mgoblue We really enjoyed the cabin and I thought it was setup very nicely for the kids. Only issue was there were a bunch of flies most likely due to the warm weather (they actually had a note about the flies in the cabin so obviously a known issue). All in all I would stay there again.
