Start with the cleanest, nigh unto museum piece 80 you can find and go from there.
It'll run you $20k likely, but your wallet and mechanic/goodies shop person will thank you in the long run.
And since you aren't a trail'er, it'll stay nice and keep it's value far longer.

For a mostly pavement pounder, big tree or 4Runner. Hang all of the decorations on it, good to go, much better highway driver.

This for sure. If you have a family go for the tree. LOVED my 80 and so did my kids (miss the rear sliding windows), but man, the tree is so much more comfortable with a family of 6
