You spent $6000 for reals. What did you pay for that FJ80? You should have spent that 6000 and bought a 97 with full lockers and leather heated seat. next time your in the market for a Fj80 call me I will sell you a dream machine.

do a tune up and do the desmog.
My '91 actually is better in passing gear with 33's than the 31's, it puts the power range right where it needs to be for accelerating onto the freeway. I find when I'm loaded down, or pulling a trailer, I will shift manually into 3rd. I don't run in 4th unless I'm over 45mph..

I think that the issue here is that you expect a 150 hp motor to push a big truck with off road tires up to left lane speeds on the highway. 70+ mph is not realistic, especially considering Texas heat and the resulting gas mileage.

When my 91 FJ lived here in TX, I cruised at ~65 on the highway. But I will admit that it runs 31" ATs and I drive like an old blue-haired lady. The result is 14mpg though.

I have never driven a 3fe motored 80, but being that the 91-92's had from the box 155 HP and 220 Torque's may have more to do with the lack of power than anything else, the 1fzfe motor form the later cars is said to have 220 HP and 275 Torques. that being said others have reported less problems with their 3fe's and slightly larger tires.

ill sell you my 94 with factory lockers and a front arb with a fresh tune and maint for 6000

I could get up to 75+ on the highway with little trouble. That was before my lift... If you thought a brick couldn't be any less aerodynamic...

my 3fe doesn't like 60, it likes 62, 67, 73, or 80+ There are just some speed ranges that it doesn't like with the 33's, but over all, it definitely performs better than with the 31's.

Sometimes it's nice to hit the turbo button and really haul ass. Why in the world they connected it to the A/C compressor, I'll never know..

just put 33x10.50 bfg all terrains on my 91 FJ80 about a month ago and honestly it rides better than it did with the 31x10.50 michelins that were on it before I did the swap. No complaints in this department, even rolling through the hills of Kentucky.

I bought mine with 33's. They just wore out, and I'm not going to be doing any wheeling that requires large tires, so I got some 31 ATs to replace them. It drives much better on the road so far. Really, the gearing and transmissions these trucks were designed with are made for these tire sizes, not for rock crawling. Get your 31s, and if you see the need for 33s or something down the line you will be more likely to accept the tradeoffs that come with a larger tire.

As opposed to others who've posted before, I've never driven anything newer than a '92, and mine is the only one with 33's, I know I've already said it, but I think it performs better in all respects with the exception of being totally loaded down through the Texas hill country, then I spend a lot of time in 3rd. I can tell after a hard 3 or 4 days at the beach that it feels tired, I believe it's time for a tranny flush..

one thing that may be worth talking about.
I've read that all 33" tires are not 33"s, some are shorter, some are taller, anyone have anything to add on that?

andrew,
I cant remember ever seeing a 285/75 or 33" actually measure 33" tall when I was shopping for tires. I think almost all tires thought of as 33s are a bit shorter.

Also, a worn in set may lose a 1/4" to a 1/2" of tread resulting in a noticeable 'gear reduction' when we are talking about a grossly underpowered vehicle to begin with..
I had to 'opportunity' to swap tires for my gf's 4 runner for a while. (money was tight, gas was expensive and the 4 runner needed tires) the worn out tires I put on the 80 were probably around the 30" range. That car wouldn't go anywhere and topped out around 80mph tops..

bottom line, I like my 33"s with stock gearing.. I'm not fast, but my turn signals and brake lights work, watch out for me...

New Tires Needed

My stock 92 with no lift and old man emu suspension looks weak with the 31". Would like to go with 33" but wondering if stock truck will experience wear/problems? Rim size is stock 10x7

When i had my 33s over stock, i felt the underpowered thingy on my 1hdt but not as bad. But the 33s overpowered the looks over stock which made me happy.

Then after i made a lift, worsened my power. That was the time i upgraded my exhaust to 3" that brought back my stock power.

I started with a new set of knock off BFG 33x12.5 and completely stuffed they will not rub on my stock suspension. since those tires have slowly deteriorated, I have been picking up used tires until I can put the $$ together for a new set. the BFG's are the same as the knockoffs, but the Michelin AT I got is rubbing on the back when it is stuffed, I have since moved that to my spare and picked up another BFG. deal is, not all 33x12.5's are the same.

I lost a little performance from a dead stop, but I swear it accelerates faster at speeds when you are getting on the freeway, I think the power band is in a better place now..
