FJ80 Hub leaking (1 Viewer)

Gentlemen,
I have a '92 FJ80 with 175k on it that just recently started to leak grease out of the front passenger side hub. Anyone have any suggestions, I am not the most technical but am somewhat capable. I noticed it on the front wheel so I took the wheel off to look at it. It appears to have a seal or something that may be worn out. Any insight would be most helpful. Driver side hub looks great. Thanks.

It's time to service the front axle.

Well, it can be a few things.

Has the front axle overhaul/birfield repack ever been done? If not, better get on it.

Is the grease mixed with 90wt oil? If so, your inner axle seals are shot and you need to address them before much longer.

It could be something as simple as the grease seal on the back of the hub/rotor assembly, or a loose hubnut on the front. Where does the grease look like it's coming from?

Dang. Ok. That is way more than I bargained for. I guess it is time to find a good Cruiser wrench in the Dallas area. I just moved here about a week ago so if anybody has any recommendations...

It's fairly straight forward if you can do it yourself. It's much cheaper but time consuming. So why not just get the birf repack kit and hit the ground running ?

Did you check your hub .. is hot . ? more than normal .. be carefull with whell bearing.

Haven't checked to see if it is hot, more than normal. Where can I find the birf re-pack kit? How long do you think it would take a moderately experienced wrencher? Have only done (by myself) things such as replacing the suspension on my 40, mild mechanical stuffs i.e. water pumps, etc. Would like to do it myself. Is a weekend enough time? Thanks for everyone's help. BTW anyone in the Dallas area want to swing by and help, I'll buy the beer and pizza.

Don't know if the grease is mixed with oil. My guess is that it is because it "oozed" all over the wheel.

PM Texican on this list. He is an active LSLC member and has a shop east of you in Bonham. You guys need to meet anyway. He can at least give you a repair bid and will take most excellent care of you if you choose to have a shop do it. Get your parts from CruiserDan in post #2.

Thanks everyone for your help. Some of my buddies had questioned me when I got my first LC (a '76 FJ40). I told them they didn't get it. That the cruiser community was something unlike any other car community. I told them about the cruiser assistance club and they laughed. They laughed when I told them about guys sharing parts, tools, expertise to help their fellow cruisers. I told them I had offers, within 4 hours of posting my dilema, to help out on a weekend. One of them has been a Jeeper and he said simply "I''ve never heard of anything like that." You guys are great. I will get ahold of Texican and CruiserDan. I can't wait to hit the trails with you all.

Seriously, I don't know why our community would be significantly different than any other. But evidently, it is.

Welcome to the wonderful world of mud...there really are a lot of helpful folks here (and only the rare dip$&!+).

Oh, and it sounds to me like you can tackle a birf job. PM Jim (post #9) to get his birf job DVD. You only need a few tools out of the norm, and they are all cheap. If you don't have the FSM, we can get you the torque settings - of course, you ought to have the FSM if you plan to work on your rig.
