Hello new to the forum, Well i went on some trails today after about an hour of being home I cranked her up and I got a few warning lights on the dash now, a/t oil temp, brake, alternator just wondering if anybody has had this problem? I think its the alternator but I dont know, seems that the voltage gauge is low its sits at half now even if i rev the engine up it dosen't move.

It's the alt. For some reason it's wired to give exactly the lights you described. Plus your gauge is definitely low.

Good luck,

Curtis

Cheers, and stick around; it's a great place.

I had a similar problem and changing the battery cables and alternator brushes fixed it right up.

Yep. Dead alternator makes things light up like Christmas.

Mine does that all the time after I play in the mud. I just give it a wash and everything goes back to normal. Been doing it after every mud trip for about two years, hasn't caused any problems yet. You might need brushes or you might just need to give it a clean to get the mud out of the brushes slides.

well today I pulled the alt and had them test it and said it was good. tested the fusable link by the batt and that was good, put the alternator back in and did the same thing so I am still waiting on the new one to come in to determine for sure if that is the problem.

Stay away from the NAPA rebuilt. I went that route 4 years ago on a "lifetime warranty" alt & replaced it every year. Last year on the way to the Vegas NASCAR race the regulator went out 100 miles from Salt lake city & smoked my NAPA spiral cell Batt. Napa replaces the Batt but said no go on the alt. I had it rebuilt at the generator exchange and that one laste 1 year also. I'm nearly finished swapping in a delco (off a 95 blazer) at ~$175 new. They have a good rep & put out 100 Amps (up from my 80 Amp OEM). Dual internal fans to keep cool while pumping out the juice.

Just throw in a set of 13.00 brushes from Toyota and be done with it.

Agreed.

Mickldo's got a point too, but how the heck do you "wash" an alt.?

Yep. I'd like more info on this one too. You just hit it with a hose?

Yeah nothing special, just wash the engine bay when you come home from your play in the mud, paying a bit of extra attention to the alternator.
I used to work as a 4wd mechanic for a Fraser Is. hire company and this was a common problem in the salt and sand environment. Sometimes a bit of crud would jam the brushes and a gentle tap on the side of the alternator case would be enough to loosen it. I usually use a wooden hammer handle so it doesn't damage the case.

problem solved got the new alt life is good agian, thanks for all the help.
now I just have to do lockers, birf rebuild you know fun stuff..

Well, if my alt ever goes out again after a day in extra wet mud, I'm going to hose it and smack it before I give up.
