I would like to put an 80 axel in the back of my 60 with the electric locker. What are the best years to go with? and Has anyone done it, whats involved with that? I keep on thinking its easy but there might be more there than I know of.

The rear is an easy swap. They are wider than the 60 axle around 63" Just set the pinion angle and weld in spring perches. There is some debate over using the elocker or not. Some say the axles in the elocked axles are not as strong.

Ryan.

You will have a stronger set up if you just throw a locker in the rear of the 60s axle. If you plan on wheeling hard the axle when it breaks it breaks in way the almost fuses it to the e-locker making it impossible to fix on the trail. You would have more strengh gains by swapping a front 80 series axle under your rig.

Or by selling the front 80 series axle he can buy a locker and some 30 spline longs and be a lot stronger ;)

Yeah, but I hate the 80 series ring and pinion size...

Even in a front axle, being reverse cut (assumption) most of the nasty weight put on the front end is while backing up under power.

Try harder :flipoff2:

Pink Panties have not gotten the abuse the 40/60 generation has ;)

But how about the rear 80 axle with an ARB? I have the 80 series axle, without the e-locker, and I am planning to do this for my 60. I thought the ARB with the 80 axle was a strong setup, am I wrong?

It is.. but the ring and pinion is weaker than a 60's..

Unless you beat on it you will be fine

What are you planning on doing to widen the front?

I am looking into some 7X series rear hubs, backing plates, rotors and calipers to make it a little narrower. I am still looking into if it is possible. It looks like it is but I won't know for sure until I actually bolt it all together.

I can't see how it would be that much narrower. But more power to ya.

It also seems a bit on the silly side to get yourself into parts that are VERY hard to come by here in the states..

Stuff breaks..
Replacements are a good thing..

Why doesn't anyone narrow the 80 axles for a 60? A good drivetrain shop can do it no prob. And I bet Mr. Long would make custom birfields.

Thats a lot of work and what would you gain?

Stinky -

Just trying to ratioinalize Dabruin's purchase - the folks that have done that seem to like it.

To me it looks like he's hoping the high pinion & OEM locker (maybe an ironic combination of weaknesses) will give better driveline angle & reliability.

Personally, I'm keeping my FF & ARB, but it's for a SUA & mild lift.
