Woohoo! Yeah, just got back from Grand Junction and the hills aren't something to dread any more! I was able to maintain 55 over the passes. Yep, 2500 at 70 is nice, pushed it a bit and found 3400 at 90 isn't too shabby either.

Just a FYI - my 200 mile drive home including the mountain passes I got 16.129 mpg!

Never got close to that with the auto.

With my A440F I turn 2450 at 70mph (GPS speed) with 4.56s and 265/75R16s Nitto Terra Grapplers (these measure 31.4" at 37 psi unloaded). With this gearing/tire size my speedo reads almost exactly right on at 60mph (well, at least right on with what my GPS displays).

I have 33x12.5 BFG's and stock gearing (4:10) so my speedo is slow by about 10%.

It should be just a little over 10%. I did the math a while back when I went from stock (28") tires to my 31s and it came out to 9.5% exactly. Verified it against a ten-mile stretch of highway (using the mile markers) and it was dead-on.

Edit: brain fart, I meant a little UNDER 10%...

Hey I am a novice at all this--and I'm a lawyer--which for sure means I can't do math. I have a completely stock 89 FJ62. Will I get better gas mileage if I put 31s on it? It seems like I should because every revolution of the wheel gives a few inches more distance. Have I got this right or not?

On straight, level highway while at the same speed that you'd be at with stock tires, yes. But given the extra oomph it takes to get the larger tires rolling and up to speed, and then the extra it takes to get up any hills negates it greatly. My average MPG went from 14 to 11 when I changed tire sizes. But since I fixed that fuel surge dampener, I gained an extra 2 MPG on average. Makes me wonder what it would've been with that part in working order if I still had stock sized tires.
