After 2 years of trying to get my rig mechanically sound it is time for some mods. I ordered the OME heavy kit from Kurt and figure I will end up with some 33 inch tires. I have searched to see if people are regearing their 62's when they step up to 33's and it looks like most guys are not but some have gone to 4.56 and others have gone to 4.88 (http://www.sonoransteel.com/cruiser.html.

This is my DD (stop and go city street traffic) and would be wheeler. It has the stock 3FE and 440 auto trans. Will probably be installing and ARB locker in the rear so what gearing should I be looking at ?

I may step up to 35's way, way down the track.

I did 4.88's, with the idea I would go to 35's later...selling my truck now though. 4.56's would be fine, more than anything, the gearing helps off road, not on road.

my fj62 with 285r16' bfg mt's (33.1") and 4.88's matched my gps mph perfectly to my stock speedometer. this was discussed on the 3fe llist a couple of years ago 4.88's and 33"s was the concensus.
not sure what other mods or improvements you have done but I highly recommend opening up and straightening your exhaust boring out the throttle body and tuning the injectors and definately getting the extreme valve body, that initself is like adding a turbo.

Jason,

As far as other mods I have not done anything but I am very interested in the extreme valve body or perhaps a whole trans from Rodney down the road. I have not been on the 3FE board much but I will have to search for "opening up and straightening the exhaust" and "boring out the throttle body" to get the specifics.

4.88's huh?

4.88's here. I plan on going larder at some point, but I can still do 70 with 33's and 4.88's. I just wish 5.29's were not so week.

If you want stock gearing go with 4.88. I run 4.56s on my '89 with 31s. This made a noticeable difference when pulling hills at highway speed. It did not make a noticeable difference around town.

get u the 34 10/50 ltb tires from swamper. then go with some 4.88s
you be amazed at what that tire will do in mud and they cheap

I have thought about the 34 X 10.5 ltb's. Not sure if we have mud here in AZ :D How are they on rocks?

in the files section on the 3fe yahoo homepage there is alot of excellent info. there is an exhuast sesection as well as the throttle body write up. there is a set of injectors and a throttle body floating around the 3fe list in which you get in line for and when its your turn you send them out to get the throttle body opened up adn the injectors cleaned and balanced then install them in your cruiser and send yours to the next in line. this is how I did mine in that mie is a daily driver and I could not afford to take it off the road for 2-3 weeks to send my own TB and injectors out.
the cencensous on the exhaust is to keep the manifold then 2.25 stainless pipes to 2 cats to a Y then 2.5" stainless pipe to a stainless muffler then straight out the back. depending on how nice a stainless muffler and cats you use it will prolly run you $400-$1000 to get it done.keep all the pipes inside of the frame there is plenty of room.
i have done all the mods I have mentioned and have no problem running 80mph on the highway with 34" trxus MT's I prefer 65-75 but I always have way more power then i need to accelerate when I need too

4:88's and 33's puts you back to stock gearing. It's perfect. I thought my truck was fine with 4:11's and 33's until I regeared. Better mileage, better power, all around better.

Exhaust routing from the 60 Series FAQ that is worth checking out.

More good info thanks.

I always have a tough time finding stuff on the 3FE list and cannot find out how to "get on the list(s)". Anyone got a link?

I just upgraded my 89 -62 to 33 Wranglers and haven't noticed a bit of difference on the road. My speedometer is off about 4 mph and the odometer is off accordingly so accurate mileage and MPG figures are currently worthless:lol:

I want to upgrade gears later as well. Good info here.

ive been running 33s on my fj62 with stock gears for years.

i am perfectly happy with stock gears

I like the 33 with the 4:11. I run on the highway a lot and that extra speed and lower RPMs is nice. On the trail with the auto tranny the low speed grunt I dont think is bad.

btw ive crossed the US 3 times with these gears and tires and never even thought about changing gears. i can run 85 comfortably on the highway and the truck works great offroad
