FJ62 with 33's - what gears?

btw ive crossed the US 3 times with these gears and tires and never even thought about changing gears. i can run 85 comfortably on the highway and the truck works great offroad

After the variety of feedback I will stick with the stock gears for 3 - 4 months and then make a decision. That will give me the chance to save up the $$ if I decide I need to change gears.

My 62 rocks with 4.11:1 gears and the H55F five speed with 33" tires. The ratio is almost stock for a 62 with 235's and the A440F. I run about a hundred rpm's higher at cruising speed than I did with the slushbox. I also enjoy driving it much more. Dunbar

Interesting option - swap the auto for a 5 speed and then ya have no need to swap gears. Not really a cheap option but if you were in need of a new tranny and gears it might be the way to go. So, Dunbar, want to come to AZ and swap a H55F into my 62?:D

No problem, I plan on going to AZ this summer anyway. It would be a nice break from herding my 3 children. You would have to take care of them of course. :crybaby:

Really, it can be done in a weekend if you have all the necessary parts on hand and can weld on the plates to attach the early 60 crossmember to the frame rails. Search this forum for "Dunbar" and "H55F" and you will find all the info on the swap. Several have done it now and it is a great upgrade.

AZ in the summer? Man it's like a desert here in the summer.:D With your 3 kids and my soon to be 4 kids perhaps they could all take care of themselves and the parents could cool off with a refreashing adult beverage and discuss the benefits of the 5 speed verses an rebuilt tranny from Rodney;)

It's all personal preference. I like to shift and Rodney was not on the radar when my 2nd A440F laid down. Had he been discovered I would have probably ordered one from him. As it is I am delighted with the H55F. The auto soaks up a certain percentage of horsepower and the 3FE needs all it can get. I am ready for some desert heat. This cold weather in Houston sucks as I have had to wear pants rather than short a lot lately. The top on my convertible stays down unless it is raining hard no matter what the temp, 35 to 105 its down. Cheers, Dunbar

33s work great with the stockers...i actually believe the auto tranny paired with the 4.11s is better suited for a 33" rather than a 31". I had a three different sets of 33s i ran with the 4.11s, one being a 33X12.50 Bogger on 15X12 rims and loved the way it pulled offroad and still pepped on the pavement.

4.56s suit the 35s, 4.88s for 37s, 5.23s for anything 39" or higher.

I ran my 37 X 12.50s on the 4.11s for over a year though and got by just fine. Drove on the interstate, in stop and go, and offroad hella good. Now, not suggesting that as a great idea, but i didn't hurt me. I was a big slow, but hey...cruisers aren't hot rods.

Nonetheless, super glad i got the 4.88s now!!! lol
Just wish i would have gotten the 5.23s instead. Oh well...Doh!
