What it is doing is, when first starting up it will rev up to 3500-4000rpm in what seems to be 2nd gear. It will not shift into 3rd. This happens every morning and after sitting at work all day. After any hwere from 1000-feet to 2-miles it will shift and run fine the rest of the time. Once it is "warmed" up it does not do this.

History - I have had a full flush done 3 years ago. Recently, I had the filter replaced. Checiking the fluid level while running and in park it is full. No leaks. When it first started doing this, I tried the 55-mph-into park thing. It seemed to help, but it may have just been my imagination.

Is this the first sounds of the death toll for the tranny? Thanks

Mike

How many miles are on your transmission?

I thought that was a common toyota thing. My Tacoma has been doing that since new, still does it after the amsoil atf change. I've been in a couple other tacomas and it does it.

Truck has 235K, tranny was changed out right before I purchased her. A used tranny was put in, mileage unknown. Thanks

This may be an opportunity to swap in a 5 speed. The guys from Atlanta Custom Creations talked about this at the March meeting for Upstate Cruisers, and since they are in your backyard it can't hurt to ask.http://www.atlantacustomcreations.com/ They may also help you diagnose the idle issue you are having.

I suspect you already have, but have you adjusted the kick-down cable?

If it isn't doing anything else bad, I would just live with it for now. Mine holds gears a bit when it is cold (like freezing and below) but not as drastically as yours. I wonder if some of your seals are getting old, and need to warm up to close clearances, or maybe when it sits, too much fluid is draining down into the pan and you are getting air in the lines...... You could try running the gear selector through D, 3,2, and 1 before driving and see if that makes any difference....

Just some random thoughts.

David,

Being an ol' cot, I really, no I mean really, like my automatic. If I wanted to shift, I would get a 40. Atlanta driving is really much nicer with an auto. She also has done real well on trails.

ACC may be getting a visit before long. I had a bunch of work done by ULC two years ago. ACC is closer to my work though. Thanks

I had the same problem and spoke to Rodney from Wholesale Automatics and he said what I was describing was hard seals. It would slowly begin to get worse, which it did, I just finished a swap this week. x2 get ready for a new or rebuilt.

I will tell you from having a lot of 62's and working for Iron Pig. It is most like ly the kickdown cable. and if you have not done so yet I would replace the throttle cable at the same time.

I would second this. Look at the kickdown and flush the ATF, remove the pan, etc.

Mike,

I did most of the work on your 62 when we (your truck and I) were both at ULC and Im sorry that you are having issues with it. However like everyone above said the kickdown cable is the first thing that I would look at. That being said those A440s dont generaly last 300k.

As far as replacing it goes there arent any cheep options. If you are set on the auto you can always put another "used" tranny in and hope it is ok or you are left with buying a New one because there isnt anyone that rebuilds them. A 5 speed swap is almost the same cost as a Auto and easier to find parts for but if you would like me to start looking for options for you I would be more than happy to do so.

Thanks

Mike,

Thanks for the info and offer. I think I will let her run a while as is, maybe get teh kick down cable looked at. When it really starts to go I am leaning towards one of the Wholesale Transmissions. I guess I will need some one at that time. Thanks.

Classic kickdown cable adjustment. play with it almost sounds tight to me try first to lossen it....not to much just a little at a time.

people always jump to the "terribly bad" transmission horrific problems life is ending my transmission is not perfect oh no--- Heck I have had the same assumptions, but with regular maintence this transmission is really good, I have 305k on mine (i bought the cruiser at 250k so I dont know if it was rebuilt before i got it,,,) and I really have no problems, only been off roading 1 time,, try the simple things first,,, change the fluid, drop the pan, check the kick down cable,, if all that fails---------->then panic , or part it out,,,

I just replaced my A440F with a H55F and have to say it's a great swap but if you really like the auto stick with it. There seem to be a number available in the 4 sale section.
