fj62: out with the auto, in with the crawler (1 Viewer)

i pressure washed the trans, t-case and bell housing after soaking them with some simple green. much more fun to tear them down this way. i painted the bell housing right away after scrubbing it some to prevent it getting rusty.

i then brought all the trans/t-case components home so i could work on them at my leisure.

Toybox "Remote" Shifter

O.K.... Sounds good, sounds like it'll be a cool rig. In answer to Gulfshoresfj60's
question... It is possible to make a "remote" lever to the toy box, it just takes a little doing. If you need any thing I can help with let me know.

Can you expound on this "remote" lever. I would be very interested in this idea. The shifter location is the big stopping point on build. I have no problem fabbing a new transmission tunnel, but that shifter location is very difficult to get around.

Remote lever

Your running a H55 right, you'll need to extend the post that comes out of the H55 for the transfer case lever, you can use another transfer case lever like your stock one, or you can fab one up out of 1/2'' rod and thread it at both ends.
Create a "block" that will pivot around the post that you have extended.(aprox 1"x1'x2" drill a hole across the block) to pivot front to back, and one on top of the block to fit your threaded rod. Then, use some 3/8" rod, thread it one one end get some 3/8" rod ends ( from osh, or any hardware store) and bend the rod to fit between your new lever and the toybox. Cut off the toybox lever around 2" from the base and weld a tab on it, then weld a tab onto you new lever. Its alot easier to use another stock lever, and it might look better to.

I had some good pics while it was out of the cruiser... but they were lost of the computer crash of 2006(mine)My Hard drive took a dump, and STUPID me didnt back ANYTHING up!
I could try to get some of the linkage while its in the cruiser, at least from the
bottom. My cruiser has a TRIPLE stick now. one for toybox(in/out) one for stock cruiser case(hi/low) and one for (2wheel/4Wheel drive)

alright, time for an update. i had to take care of a couple of other projects, had family in from out of town over the x-mas break and was waiting for a few parts from toyota. one of the shift detent springs in the t-case was bent (i assume from previous assembly/repair) so i had to get a new one along with a pair of output flange nuts and a new shift fork seal simce that was'nt in the reseal kit for some reason. anyways, got all the parts and finally had some time to mock the combo up. it's not completely finished yet but it's getting there.

and a "dry run" of the whole combo. i always like to assemble major components like this without gaskets/sealants first in case there are any clearance or fittment problems. turns out that everything worked out perfect. great parts quality, everything fit perfect and very nice machine work as allways from marlin crawler!!!

the pair will have to be split one more time to apply the proper sealant between the two. if everything goes according to plan the install in the fj62 will start sometime during the week of jan 22nd. keep your fingers crossed!

when/if the h55f is swapped in does the combo just grow by the length of the 5th gear section? it doesn't look like a simple swap, more adapters needed?

yup, with an H55F in there it would be roughly 3.5" longer due to the 5th gear assembly/housing. you'd have to run a the same adapter between the trans and toybox. the mainshaft on the H55F would have to be changed iirc.
