I have an '89 FJ62 which needs a new fuel pump. I am attempting to remove the fuel tank, but so far have not managed to wiggle it out.

There is not much room, so I imagine that there may be some ticks to getting the tank out.

Has anyone out there removed a fuel tank from an FJ62?

Please give me some advice.

Scott

Just did it, get some friends! First off, remove all of the hoses attached to it and fuel lines. There should be 5 vent hoses and two fuel lines along with the main fuel line that you put gas into it with. Once that's done, take off the spare tire holder and remove the two sway bar brackets. They should come off pretty easily. After that, remove the two straps that go across the tank on the bottom and it should come right out. It's probably possible to take out the tank without removing the sway bar brackets, but is much easier to do so without them in the way and would be horrible to install with them in the way. Hopefully that helps, let me know if you need any other help.

The most important thing is to remove the rear sway bar mounts. It is 10 times easier to get it out that way. Make sure to drain it before you remove it as well. All the side hoses are pretty easy to remove. The hardlines that are at the back of the tank (trany side) have a small bracket holding them in place. Unbolt that so the hardlines can move down when you move the tank down to unbolt the fuel pump.

I was tempted but I did not have a good idea of how to fabricate a quality service panel. Given enough time I may end up putting a service panel in there. We'll see, I'd want it to have a seal so mud and dirt didn't get in.

I agree with the sway bar bracket removal to make it easier, it still took some wiggling to get it out. Having them out will make it a lot easier to re-install. Trust me on this, I had to do it in a hotel parking lot.

As far as an access panel which I will do soon: Just get a section of a scrapped 60 series, cut it larger than the opening you'll cut and screw the patch panel over it with weatherstripping.

I sincerely suggest doing the hole while you have the tank out.
