I am new to this forum, but have owned several cruisers over the years. This is my first 62 and it is a 1990 model.I bought it at an auction and it would barely run and reeked of raw fuel. The air blew cold and the body is rust free,so i bought it.I took it to our local toyota dealer who claimed it was bad gas, clogged fuel filter, and fouled sparkplugs.I told him i did'nt think so,but since he was a toyota mechanic i said go ahead.Of course it ran no better after paying $360.00 He then said it was the egr which was old, rusted, did not hold vacuum.I said i don't think thats why it's running rich, but he was a master mechanic.they only charged me for parts, but $360.00 later it runs no better. Then he said it is surely plugged convertors. So i had my muffler shop check them and they were fine.I called the toyota service manager and he said it's the maf sensor,so i installed a good used one that had been tested on a good running cruiser. It ran a little better for 5 minutes and then died.It wil start run up to 1000rpm and die.I have now taken it to Dung Nguyen(formerly cool cruisers mechanic). He checked every solenod, switch, fitting, sensor and swapped them with new parts and put my parts on his cruiser and all my parts were good.He then decided it had to be electrical, but all the wiring tested good.I do not know what to do next and dung is kinda stumped as well. The compression was checked and was actually too high he said(165-180psi per cylinder).Any thoughts on this or anyone with a similar problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you verified things on the ignition side? (coil, cap, rotor, spark plug wires, timing)

Where is the raw fuel smell coming from? The tailpipe (unburnt fuel) or the engine bay (a leak), or the rear of the vehicle (leak back there, bad fuel cap seal)?

have you checked it for codes?

Yep we need codes. Before we can go any futher is it running at all? if so what does it do now?

Oh yea welcome to mud.

I had the fuel smell on my '88fj62, and after examination I discovered a bad fuel pulsation dampener. It's a little mushroom shaped thing that screws into the rear portion of the (fuel/air?) rail near the firewall. Looking at the motor from the front it is on the right side behind everything near the firewall screwed into a banjo fuel line. It's hard to get a wrench on, or even see so I bought a cheapo 22mm combo wrench and hacked it down halfway with an angle grinder to replace the thing. 80 bucks for the part at Napa.
Also check fuel pressure regulator - If that malfunctions it will overpressure causing other things (like the dampener mentioned above) to blow out. Fuel pressure reg. seems to be a cure all for a lot of folks on here, and I cannot believe that the mechanic did not look into that. Good luck!

Edit: If you run your finger back there seeking the fuel pulsation dampener while motor is running, and it comes back damp with fuel, then you know what it is.

Try looking into the the multi-pin connector connecting the MAF to the filter. Sometimes the pins get pulled out from the wire harness.

I'm going to go with all the above on this one. And codes is always the place to start. I'm not sure a bad FPR and dampener would trigger codes. At least is didn't on mine.
Post up some codes, and go from there.

1990 fj62 fuel problem

Thanks for some great idea's on the problem.Toyota of Richardson did not test anything and said they could'nt check for codes.I told them about the jumper wire deal in the manual and they were not interested. The check engine light has never been on.The truck will not run long enough to leave a code,i don't think. Dung is a very respected landcruiser mechanic in the dfw area, but i will have to mention all of these idea's to him and see if he checked all of these possiblilities. The raw fuel smell is from the tailpipe--it is running very rich.the plugs were fouled and the guy who tested my convertors said my new muffler was getting a gold spot on it from raw fuel overheating the muffler. Also the tank was dropped, flushed, and reinstalled by toyota with a new filter and they did not mention any problems in the fuel system.BIGSUR mentioned something to me about a recall on some fuel tanks related to venting or rusting.I don't think anyone has checked on the electrical side.I am going to print this out and take it to Dung(pronounced young) and have him test all these items.thank you for some fresh idea's.I am trying to have this truck ready for the opening of deer season on the 3rd of November.I have been hoofing it during bow season.

Dam the LEAST TOYOTA CAN do is do a fuel pressure test . Yea it only takes 2 minutes to check for codes just find a bobby pin or something. It has to be the damper or the fpr not much else.

The codes will stay in the system regardless of if the engine is on. As long as the battery is not disconnected the code will be there(provided there was a code in the first place). Once the battery is disconnected everything is reset.

I didnt see this mentioned, but could it be the fuel PUMP?
From what Ive read in TT, it sounds like some of the symptoms?

Just a guess!

Another one with "test the fuel pump pressure". Very least jump the fuel pump relay to see if there is an issue when checking the pressure.

Does the gas smell sour? My FJ60 sat for too long. Gas went sour and I could barely get it fired up using starting fluid. Once gas is old it makes it near impossible to start. Depending on the quality of fuel, anything from six months to a year and it will loose its ability to start a cold engine.

In my case, a shot of ether, would get it to crank over and just barely run. Still on ongoing saga to get ride of the old gas (I'll use 20:1 mix of new to old to burn it in other vehicles.... ). I keep meaning to run up to Home Depot with old gas in the back of the truck, hoping someone will steal it. Darn, no one has touched it. :)

Oh, I'm on a well. Very sensitive about 'what goes into the ground ends up in our water'. Friend commented it would work on the weeds behind the house. Uh, no thanks.

The truck will not run long enough to leave a code,i don't think.

Check the Throttle Position Sensor. Originals get tired and don't return to idle. Usually this tosses a code 51.

Any conclusion to this? I'm dealing with the same issues.
