Hello Again.

Now that I have a workable solution to the hot start issue, the other big-time problem is with the quirks in the electrical system. Bottom Line: The vehicle is bleeding electricity somewhere, and as I am driving, I slowly watch the volt meter on the dash slide downward, and the battery eventually drains, and the vehicle will cease running (once, on a very steep, rugged trail on a very cold winter night - resulting in a exceptionally unhappy girlfriend.) As much as I hate to say it, we were saved by another random couple in a Wrangler and my set of jumper cables :(

Perhaps this is an issue with the stereo amplifier I have in that it isnt hooked up correctly. It sometimes clicks and buzzes. While driving and as the voltage is getting real low, the stereo will start resetting - turning of and then turning on again. I also have upgraded speakers throughout the truck, as well as a new head unit. The headlights also dim. Obviously, my battery is being drained (its a red Optima battery, less than a year old), and the car is running out of electricity - but could this be due to improper wiring to the amp/upgraded stero system or the system draining too much power?

The only other thing it could be is a bad alternator - that its not putting in the load that im drawing out resulting in a drained battery. I am eying the 140 amp Mean Green as a replacement - especially since I am running a 10 inch truck box sub, and will soon add a pair of Hella Rallye 1000s, a CB system w/loudspeaker, and a double DIN touchscreen head unit. Thoughts?

I would stick with a stock alternator, but start there, since it's clearly giving you some grief.

Update: Got a new "remanufactured" alternator from Oreilly - installed it this weekend, and no more battery discharge issues. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Btw - Replacing that alternator was a PITA! Seriously considering the desmog option after all that trouble.
