Hello all, need help identifying my alternator. Think it is not stock. 1988 FJ62, all stock (besides perhaps alternator and stereo head unit), 176k miles. Voltmeter started reading at top end of gauge (16v) and aftermarket stereo shut off (over voltage cutoff I think). Didn't put a multimeter on the battery while engine was running, but gauge read higher than normal at idle and would jump to 16v or so when revved. Immediately suspected voltage regulator. Took alternator off to have local parts store check to make sure VR was the problem. Took it to two places and got same answer. The pigtail connector the computer called for didn't fit my alternator and thus they couldn't run the test. I thought their database was just incorrect, so took it back home to replace VR. Then noticed my alterator doesn't look like the one in thr 3FE manual, nor like the one on the computer of the parts store. Looked at pigtail on truck and it has a factory looking adaptor that goes from what the parts store showed it should be, to what is on the back of the alternator. Upon closer inspection alternator is stamped "made in Taiwan". So I'm wondering what type alternator this is. Is it a stock replacement, or aftermarket? The pigtail adaptor in the truck looks factory, but it seems too coincidental that it matches what the parts stores showed. Haven't removed rear cover of alternator yet, but am now suspect thr spare OEM VR I have will fit it. See pics below. Off-white connector plugs into back of alt. Third pic shows connector with adaptor unplugged. That one looks like the parts store said it should. Thoughts?
