... apparently went out and wasn't kicking on the compressor. Mechanic said it's 'up in the evaporator core' and that he had to bypass it because they couldn't find the part. $300 to bypass and refill with freon (it was 1/2lb short) Reasonable? Where can I find the switch (so i don't risk burning out the compressor)?
 
8 oz. of R-12 is about $20 retail ($30 for a 12 oz. can). 15 minutes to install it, and a few minutes to short the low pressure cut out switch. $300 seems a bit much, but if you're not DIY on stuff like this, you're a bit at their mercy. The compressor will only burn out if you run it while the A/C contains no refrigerant, so if your A/C starts blowing hot air suddenly, just turn off the A/C ASAP.
