Decided to start modifying my 89 FJ62. There are about 270K miles on it. While changing out the main seal, we noticed that the tcase was leaking. Sent out the tcase and transmission to get the tcase rebuilt and regeard to 4:1.

While the transmission is out, I think it would be a good time to get it rebuilt too. I have not experienced any issues so this is more of a preventative measure. The PO owner was an older couple that owned it for the first 260K. From the looks of the maintenance they really cared for the vehicle, but I didn't see any evidence of any transmission maintenance when I reviewed the history from 1998-2015.

Does anyone have any actual experience getting their A440F rebuilt in the Nor Cal area? I am looking for recommendation on where to get this rebuild completed. I'm open to So Cal recommendations too but since the transmission is in Stockton I'd like to keep it up there if possible.

Thanks!

In case you are wondering...no, I dont want to swap in a manual and Georg doesn't rebuild autos. :)

@chap79 , Yep, that was the first place I looked. No transmission shops listed but I guess I could call those in the area and ask for recommendations. Was really hoping for actual owners to chime in with their experience with a particular shop.

@bookland Wasn't sure. I personally know the owner of a shop in Paradise (east of Chico) but that's quite a drive from where you're at.

@chap79 Thats only 2.5hrs north of where the transmission is now. Might give me an excuse to go rafting. Please post or PM info. Thanks again!

Talk to Josiah. Tell him Harley, Dallas' brother recommended you.

@89fjlandcruiser , That is where the transmission and tcase are right now. He hasn't had any recent experience with a local shop rebuilding an Auto so he suggested I try to find someone on mud that has a recommendation.

You know having an a440f rebuilt is like $4K right?

From what I hear, it can range from 1,500 to 5,000. I am hoping to land somewhere near the bottom or middle.

Still looking for a shop in CA to do a rebuild. I also looked in to the Wholesale Automatics option from Australia. Here is the response from Rodney as of last week.

Thank you for contacting Australia’s Largest 4 Wheel Drive Automatic Transmission Company.

So are the hard parts just completely shot on these usually? A good quality master rebuild kit for a A440 is around 300$ to a cheap kit for 170$

Couldn't tell you. I'm going of the AAMCO receipt from 2001 when the A440f my 62 used to have was rebuilt (around ~$4500 if I remember correctly)

Consider in the cost:
-Rebuild kit for transfer case
-Possible torque converter rebuild
-Labor for pulling combo
-Labor for rebuilding transmission
-Labor for rebuilding transfer case
-Labor for reinstallation

And I can tell you from firsthand experience that transmission/transfer combo is HEAVY!

Give Kim at Coliseum Transmission a call. I just had my fj62 in there to add an oil cooler and fix a leak. I inquired about his ability to do a rebuild, rough quote was around 3500, but again that was a rough quote. All he does is auto boxes. He could have taken me for a ride trying to sort out a rumble I though was the torque converter in gear, he determined a poorly mounted alternator when under engine stress shimmied. His Yelp reviews are all outstanding. Might be worth getting a real quote, i'd bring my fj62 back if i ever need bigger work or mess with the transfer.

Gary at Mudrak in Sonoma CA might be able to do it for you or probably knows someone.
