I purcahased a 1984 FJ60 with a Weber carb - 38 DGAS/ES. I have had endless issues trying to get it to idle. Carb was stripped, cleaned and reinstalled. Tested for vacuum leaks. Got it idling great when engine was cool to warm. But as soon as it ran hot it would stall. RPM would vary between 400 to 800 RPM - it never idled constantly at 800 even though this is where we set it. Got it idling fine when hot but then would stall when cool to warm. After several months I retested it for leaks by spraying some engine starter around the base of the carb and the RPM increased. Figured it must have a leak. I then noticed the nuts holding the carb were lose - so I tightened them - perhaps a little too tight because now it will not idle at all - period. Not when cold and not when hot.

The carb is installed on a stake of aluminum spacers. Any ideas?

Thanks - Fred

Is the choke hooked up? Can’t tell from the photos. Sounds like the choke plate wasn’t opening when it warmed up.

Yes, it has an electronic choke which appears to be working fine.

Okay just checking. I disliked the electronic choke and just disabled it altogether. Never needed it in Texas.

Do you have your timing set to the BB? It also looks like you don’t have a vacuum line to the base of the carb, I had the largest pot on the distributor advance to that port.

I am having idle issues with a Weber that my 60 came with as well. It's driving me nuts!!! I have a brand new Weber a freshly rebuilt engine that is super smooth running but that weber sucks. I get it idling perfect, drive around for a while and the idle is at 1200 rpm. I have come to the conclusion that Aisin is the only way to go. I am switching to a stock carb. I have dealt with a few Webers over the years and I don't think they work well on a 2f. I think they are fine on 4 cylinder engines and such but I am done with the whole mess. My advice is to go back to a stock carb. They are more complex than a Weber but work so much better IMHO. Good luck with yours, I am tired of trying to get mine right.

I am with you on the manual choke. Did you need to make any modifications to the carb to do this? On the timing, there is no vacuum line to the base of the carb. How does this work?

Thanks for the feedback - my weber is certainly driving me nuts as well. I gather from all the posts on the Internet that I am not alone. Although the feelings are mixed - some love 'em and others hate 'em. Have you switched back and happy with the decision? I think I am going to do the same if I am unable to solve this issue. The frustrating part is it runs great while driving - it is just the idling I can't get right. I'll give it a few more tries by my patience is running out.

I understand, the problem is I replaced the carb with one off ebay, a Chinese 70 dollar special, and it seems to work quite well except I am stealing now with an air leak at the carb insulator. I keep trying to get it stopped but as of yet I haven't been able too. I am picking up another Aisin carb from CL later today. Good luck!

All I did was loosen the three screws around the white plastic thing where the wire connects for the choke and I think there is a spring inside which releases tension and then the choke flap stays open. I did buy a manual choke conversion but never installed it. Sold it with the carb.

The only reason I switched back to the original carb was for AC Idle Up feature. That’s it. My Weber ran great. Did not diesel, fired right up. Make sure you set the idle to about 800-850rpm, this allows for the AC to run and not bog the engine. The side effect is that you will always have a higher than stock idle.
