Hey guys. long time lurker. I need to rebuild my 4 speed in my 87 fj60. 4th gear is roaring.I'm capable of the work but i remember seeing a earlier post detailing the job with some homemade tools. I can't seem to find it now. any ideas or help? I have the FSM but not all the factory tools

From what I gather, you have two options due to a lack of parts available for the H41/42.

-swap to an H55F 5 speed
-swap in a lower mileage 4 speed.

On a budget the second will be far cheaper than a rebuild service, even if they parts were available.

I recommend the Terrain Tamer rebuilt kit from @orangefj45 Georg @ Valley Hybrids

Any needed hard parts and he will more than likely be able to help you with those too.

I've got two H42 (4spd) in the back yard you can have for free if you have a way of picking them up in So Cal (L.A.) area. Both were removed for 5 spd install.

Are you sure it's the transmission?

Usually they'll make noise in 1st-3rd and less noise in 4th.

If the combo is still in the cruiser then I would double check to see where the noise is coming from. A set of chassis-ears or a stethoscope would've a good way to determine the source of the noise.

Also keep in mind that to rebuild the transmission, you'll need to tear the Tcase apart.
I have all the parts and pieces as well as rebuild kits in stock.

Thanks for the plug Jason!!! @reevesci

And if you have any tech questions, I'll be happy to help.
I literally finished this combo 20 minutes ago.

More than welcome. Just want people to go to the right place for trans and t/c parts, IMO.... ;)

The PO of my 1987 paid almost $4,000 to have the transmission rebuilt back in the mid 1990's. Then.......less than one month later he paid the same shop to rebuild the t case for another $1,000. I would say the he got a bit ripped off! He saved all the receipts.

Mine gets progressively louder 1-3 and silent in 4th. Clearly it spends the most time in 3rd so that explains all the wear.

By the looks of that transmission, apparently Georg eats off his:)

I remember the first combo I ever bought from Georg. A new H55F and a rebuilt TC. Opened the crate and just stared at it. Almost made me cringe to take it out and install it. I remember getting a few smudged fingerprints on the TC and working frantically to clean them off. HA!!! pride of ownership of a masterpiece.....
