FJ60 rear bumper build

I had to build a swingout tire carrier too, it all started with a Comp 4x4 hd tire carrier hinge kit welded to a bracket that will bolt to the bumper.

Here it is, a lot of blood sweat and tears building this one but I think it was worth it

I used a bear claw latch, it makes opening and closing much easier compared to the toggle latch systems that are commonly used. just slam the tire carrier shut, and release the lockpin and its shut tight and rattle free. to open pull up pop pin and twist it to keep it disengaged, pull the handle behind the jack, tire swings out and locks itself into the open position. To close it you pull the round handled pop pin, the swingout is free to swing shut, then drop the lock pin.

It really does, the jack tucks in nice and snug behind the tire out of harms way.

Hey guys I need to make some room in the shop and clear out some bumpers, I have 3 rear and one front available now, $500 for a rear and $600 for the front if anyone is interested. That is in bare steel, I can have them powdercoated and epoxy primed in black for $150 more. These are FULL bolt on, no cutting or drilling required very easy to install, all hardware and install instructions included. Sorry pickup only right now. The first rear bumper pictured in bare steel is no longer available. I will sell my swingout tire carrier bumper if anyone is interested, $1300 takes it bare steel pickup only.

Thanks everybody and please let me know if you have any questions about any of it

I really like the bolt on idea; very neat work.

Damn, if you were within a few hundred miles of Atlanta, I would take a front and rear off your hands. Nice work, love the look of both front and rear.

Thanks Guys that is great to hear, and very inspiring! I am going to try my luck building some rock sliders today, and finish up some details on a front winch bumper I have been working on.

Really like the look of that front bumper. Seems to follow the body lines nicely and tucks right in. Nice job!

Post some more pics of it if you got some please.

Cheers!

Thanks for the compliments, Its very motivating to hear! I have a couple pics of the front bumper, all cold formed with same heavy gauge steel I use on my rear bumpers with 2" square tubing across the front, 1/4" bracketry, attaches with 8 bolts to the frame of the truck, no cutting or drilling needed either, straight bolt on just like the rear. I still need to drill the two holes up front for the hawse fairlead. It works very well with the highlift jack too, lift it off the ground from a far corner and the bumper doesn't flex at all, nice solid platform for winch. It has 3/4" thick shackle mounts as well that transfers the load right to the frame. 3/4 thick steel seems excessive for the shackle mounts but I have seen to many thin shackle mounts on the mass produced bumpers bent up real sad looking like a stiff breeze will blow them off. These are not DOT approved either, it will not crush in a impact like the mass produced DOT's, its like having a snow plow on your truck, you hit something and the bumper will not collapse and absorb impact so of course this it is intended for off road use.

I think The frame may be slightly different on the 60 and 61-62? this all has been fitted to my 87 fj60

Thanks again guys, I have had a really good response so far so I am actually going to send the rest of my bumpers I have to powdercoat asap to get them finished and crated up, I look forward to hopefully building some more soon!

Looks great. I fabbed my own rear and yours has a similar stock-ish feel, but I'm curious what the pricing on the front bumper would be, without the upper hoops? Just can't seem to find the time to fab much lately, and this is pretty close to what I had in mind. I'm in the SD area as well (IB). Also, what are the dimensions of the winch seating area? I'm hoping someone is going to chime in on the frame difference, I've got a 62. If you need some measurements off a 62, let me know. Nice job on the sway away as well. I like that it's an add on. Thanks!

I like that bumper, has some clean lines and stockish fell as well, nice work!

That badland (which I hope I wont regret buying)12k winch is sitting on a 7" deep and 26" wide piece of 1/4" plate. The bumper could be scooted forward a bit I guess to fit a bigger winch, the bolt holes on the bumper will have to be adjusted a little. And for a front bumper without the hoops -$100 sound fair? but the hoops make jacking it up very easy.
