I have become addicted to Satellite radio and am thinking about adding it into my FJ60. The single din is limiting and I'm thinking about one of the pop out LED displays. They seem to either pop up or pop down. I've seen photos on Instagram of people with a pop up but it also seems a bit distracting. Anybody have opinions? There also seems to be the choice of putting a double din radio in a center console. My concern there is spilling a drink on it from the nearby cup holders.

Great question. I’m of no help but interested in others thoughts on the topic.

I have a single din Kenwood with the Kenwood siriusxm module and it works fine.

I have one in my pickup. Seems to work fine

I guess my first post will be about radios! I just installed a Clarion M508 in my rig. I don't have satellite, but it looks like it's capable with a special tuner. Single din. I chose it just because its super minimalistic stylewise but capable technology wise. I don't need disco lights going on my head unit...and thats hard to find. Its actually a marine radio in case you get in some very very deep water

I liked the idea of a vehicle with manual window cranks and also a 7” display screen. I will rethink that. I’ve also thought about putting in a push button start in place of the unneeded choke. Just for fun. 😏

Pictures? More info, speaker layout?

Sorry for the slow reply, she's in storage hiding from the salt. I got the best picture I could, not great though.

As far as speakers, previous owner put in some 5" round speakers or something- they are absolute garbage. Anyways, it's another project getting speakers figured out. Might be doing a swap of door panels and seats out of a parts cruiser I just got, so I might go back to the original rectangular size. Currently the dash speaker doesn't work. I don't even know if it's in there. I don't have any plans to do anything fancy like a sub, I prefer keeping things stock and simple as much as possible.

As far as the clarion head unit itself, it's got bluetooth, pandora built in, aux cord, USB plug. Pretty much everything I wanted and it still looks clean. Just have to add some plastic bits on the sides to fill the gaps.

Why do you need a touch screen for XM Radio? Simple higher end bluetooth enabled headunit should do just fine then stream the music through the XM app. If you are more worried about the reception then that would be something you would need to deal with with plus then you could mount the antenna for it where ever is necessary.

I am probably one of the few people that does have a single din touch screen Android headunit. I love it a lot but I mainly stream music via pandora. It has Apple CarPlay so I can easily utilize all those functions and it being an Android based headunit it has the ability to download apps to the unit and utilize from there directly. I have used Waze, GaiaGPS and Google Maps through it with no issues.

Related sort of, but what are you 60 guys doing for an install kit? Crutchfield doesn’t show one and I don’t want it to look like crap with gaps. Any ideas on mounting for a single din that looks good?

What head unit do you have? Pics installed?

I’m looking at one of these myself. I’ve been looking at the pioneer.
I would love an updated retro radio, however I want a screen for maps.

Look in my build thread in my sig line... probably a few pages back or you can use one of the pics to link to my Flickr account where you will see all my pics of the cruiser.

Unit I use is a Joying 9853 7" screen universal single din unit. Originally had a different "box" for the screen that started having issues. Even though Joying is a China based company they were super helpful and warrantied the old unit with a newer unit running a better processor! Believe this would be the equivalent of what I have now.

Depends on your needs. I’ve used the stock radio with Bluetooth fm modulator with upgraded speakers. Sufficient for my needs.
Totally suitable for my needs too, except my stock original radio is on the fritz. Only the right side speakers work, and with the cost and age of trying to track down a used original radio, I’d just assume put something newer in.

Wasnt there a thread not to long ago about someone finding a guy here in the US that was repairing the old radios for fairly cheap??

Yeah theres a guy in Burbank, Ca. that will test them for free and give an estimate. He fixed my oem radio.
He is an immigrant from eastern Europe of some sort so communication is best done in person. Or he will have a family member call you.
